Biography

80s punk band Dead Kennedys are best known for their underground hit singles "California Über Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia", from their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) and the 1981 single entitled "Too Drunk to Fuck", which reached the top forty in the UK charts. In 1985 the Kennedys third album Frankenchrist came with a poster of H.R. Giger's controversial painting Penis… Read more in Amazon's Dead Kennedys Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Mind The Soap Opera, This Is Some Good Music, July 23, 2002
This review is from: Plastic Surgery Disasters / In God We Trust Inc. (Audio CD)
This is my favorite Dead Kennedy's release. I will side-step the DK's current soap opera for a moment to review this disc. First of all, the Dead Kennedys were probably one of the most well-round, musically talented bands to emerge from the punk scene in the early '80's. East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, and D.H. Peligro were some of the best musicians ever to be called punk rock. No one else sounded like the Dead Kennedys. The "In God We Trust, Inc." EP was the DK's nod to DC-style hardcore. Its filled with hyperspeed jams that, unlike much of the hardcore that was emerging, is filled with great riffs and, despite the speed, just a great sense of what makes a good song, not just simple 3 chord verses and sing-along chorus. The jazz into to "We Got A Bigger Problem Now". "Plastic Surgery Disasters" is again filled with hyperspeed thrash, but its also tempered with influences of surf (especially "Moon Over Marin") and spaghetti western music (just listen to "Winnebago Warrior"). The fact that the group wrote much of this album as a whole is probably to a big reason for that. All throughout, Jello Biafra's lyrics are smart and funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars DKs 2nd best. Buy it on ANY label., June 1, 2003
This review is from: Plastic Surgery Disasters / In God We Trust Inc. (Audio CD)
Please, people, don't kill yourself trying to find a used Alternative Tentacles version, it's just not worth the time. The music is still awesome, no matter WHAT label it's on. This is the 2nd best DK album, right behind Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.

This is a really good album to get if you're new to the DKs. It's extremely diverse, ranging from long, slowed-down punk opuses ("Moon Over Marin", "I am the owl") to extreme hardcore 1-minute-or-less songs ("Religious Vomit", "Moral Majority"). As always, Jello's lyrics are absolutely divine, targeting everything from organized religion ("Moral Majority") to fear of self-expression ("Halloween"). If you're into punk/hardcore and you don't own any DK albums, you don't know what you're missing. Or, if you're into the DKs and you don't own this, you should definitely pick it up. The only DK record that tops this is Fresh Fruit.

The DKs are my favorite punk band of all time and I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't matter which record label it's on, it's good!, January 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Plastic Surgery Disasters / In God We Trust Inc. (Audio CD)
Well, first I want to say that this whole thing with people saying not to buy this because it's not on Alternative Tentacles and because Jello was sued by the other 3 members is getting really annoying. I do feel for Jello, believe me, I do! I also think it's sleazy that the three ex-kennedys sued so they could put songs into a commercial and a video game. But please, try to be a little open-minded here. I have all the Dead Kennedys cd's on Manifesto. Why? Because I'm a corporate sellout who wants to destroy music? NO! Because the Alternative Tentacles versions are out of print and I don't see why I should have to search the globe for used copies when I can find perfectly good versions in a music store right across the street from where I work. It shouldn't matter what record label it's on, it's still the same great music. You still have the angry thrash fury of Government Flu, Well Paid Scientist, and Riot. You still have the venomous sarcasm of Bleed For Me, Halloween, and I Am The Owl. You still have the soaring beauty of Moon Over Marin. You also still have the fiery hardcore of the In God We Trust Inc. ep. So please quit being so whiny and self-righteous and let people buy whatever version they want or can of this Dead Kennedys cd and the others so they can still hear the greatness of this band without having to feel that it might be wrong because the version they bought was rereleased by...Uh oh! Sellouts!!! Oooh!(Notice my sarcasm)
