4.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, not what I was looking for, July 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Plastics Handbook (Paperback)
PLEASE NOTE: The only reason I am giving this book a low review is not because of the lack of information it contains, but because initially it was not what I was looking for.

I am in a Packaging major and my plastics class was not as beneficial as I would have hoped. Plastics are a huge part of the industry and I was hoping for some extra reading so I can get the information sorted out.

I was simply going on the reviews when I purchased this. This book contains more about plastic styles and applications (such as Transparency, Cushioning, Tasteless, Blended, Naturally wearing, Use in the oven, ect.) rather than specific plastic types (PE, PVC, PC, PLA, EVA, ect). It does offer some plastics names in the descriptions. For example, on the page "Heat resistant, flexible", they have PVC as the best for that application. They also have plenty of other industry-specific plastics too.

The book has tons of colored, detailed pictures and set aside information about Dimensions (though I'm not sure what it's meant for), Features, More, and Applications. Each page has an explanation of the plastic and what plastics would best suit it. Each page is a different application of the plastic. For the most part, I can easily identify the products that are pictured, if not, there is a nearby caption saying what it is, the designer, and manufacturer.

I say this book is more for people who are familiar with plastics and getting ideas for applications rather than reading up on additional plastic information. I'm sure I'll need this book eventually so I won't be returning it.

Artistically done, no frills, very detailed, beautifully presented. Very helpful for me. Now, I want to be able to identify all plastics on sight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great review of unusual plastics, June 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Plastics Handbook (Paperback)
I was looking for a review of unusual plastics to use in my shop and found that this book provided me with the start I needed. Each plastic is presented with a photo and description of common uses, their limitations as well as the sources where they can be purchased. The book has been a nice reference and has lead me to further research into the world of plastics.
