I was very pleased with these magnetic weights. They fit perfectly on my regular iron weights and they stay on while I'm lifting. They are great to add just a little more weight when I'm between 15 and 20 lbs. They don't work on the weights that are covered with rubber!

I wish I had thought of this! These PlateMates (and their 5/8-lb little brothers) enable me to progress in weight in most of my exercises nearly every workout (even if it is only 5/8 or 1.25 lbs). I started out rehabilitating a shoulder injury. Micro-loading makes it a LOT easier to do that for rehab work, but these are also useful for pure strength or bodybuilding exercises, too. Read Rippetoe's book "Starting Strength" for a good discussion on linear progression and micro-loading.

These are pricey, but they are so convenient that you will not regret the purchase. For bi-lateral dumbbell exercises you will need (at a minimum) 2 pairs of the 1-1/4 lb plates, and 2 pairs of the 5/8 lb plates. This will enable you to go up in 1-1/4 lb increments. And if you want to go up in 5/8-lb increments, you will actually need 3 pairs of the 5/8-lb PlateMates. If you have two pairs of 1.25-lb PlateMates and a two pairs of 5/8-lb PlateMates you have the ability to do bi-lateral work starting from 5/8 lb up to 3-3/4 lb using only the plate-mates. Which means you don't need to purchase 3-lb, 8-lb, or 12-lb dumbbells.

These will not work with rubber-covered dumbbells. Good Luck and Happy Lifting!
