Product Description

January's birthstone shines in these simple and elegant garnet stud earrings. These pretty studs showcase 8mm rounds of deep red garnet, mounted in light-enhancing four-prong basket settings, and set on posts that secure with friction backings. The settings, posts, and backings are all crafted in gold-dipped 925 sterling silver. Gorgeous garnet is prized for its rich natural reddish-brown color and its notable brilliance, a quality derived from garnet's particularly high refraction of light.

January Birthstone: Garnet

Garnets come in a variety of colors but are best known for their deep red shade. January's birthstone is associated with faithfulness, sincerity, truth, and grace, and those born in this month are said to be loyal, devoted friends.

History of Birthstones

Chances are you can name your birthstone, but have you ever wondered how certain stones came to be associated with particular months? Most gem scholars trace the tradition to the Old Testament story of Aaron, whose breastplate was decorated with twelve precious stones, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Over time, these stones were linked with certain powers and tied to particular astrological signs, and later to calendar months.

There are many variations of birthstone lists, including Mystical birthstones, which originate from Tibet and date back over a thousand years, and Ayurvedic birthstones, associated with ancient Indian medicine and beliefs. Birthstones have also been tied to ancient Pagan religions, and even to the collective wisdom of the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

The modern birthstone list, perhaps the most universally known, was released by the American National Association of Jewelers and officially adopted in 1912. Whether you embrace birthstone lore, or look upon it with a skeptical eye, there is an undeniable appeal to collecting a beautiful gemstone that is reputed to hold special power, meaning, and good fortune just for you.

Garnets are my favorite gemstone. I love them in Victorian jewelry, especially with seed pearls. I wanted a pair of garnet earrings to add variety to my teaching wardrobe, and I wanted them to be cheap so I wouldn't be upset if I lost them. (I lost my last pair.) For the price I paid (86% off), I wasn't expecting fabulous jewelry, but then garnets aren't expensive anyway.

Well, the photo of these is pretty misleading. The pair I received has a reddish-brownish (almost orange-ish) color, and the stones are very translucent--none of the lush complexity of my other garnets. I don't love them, but they'll suit my purposes. Besides, it's not worth shipping them back.

By the way, the packaging is nice (much nicer than the earrings warrant): a velvet pouch inside a jewelry gift box.

In spite of the other review about the color, I ordered these anyway because Amazon dropped the price to $4.10 with super saver shipping. I figured they could be a stocking stuffer for Christmas if nothing else. I also know people with January birthdays. Anyway, the color of my earrings is clearly, and definitely, red with no brown or orange overtones. They are flat terrific, to the point I'm reconsidering whether I should keep them myself. Also, they are a medium to deep red, not nearly as dark as the picture, and they are not translucent, although they have a good brightness about them. If you are not as familiar with the metric system, as I am not, 8 mm translates into 1/4 inch for the diameter of these stones, so the earrings are fairly big, but not overly so. If Amazon gets these in again, especially at the same price, I would highly recommend.
