5.0 out of 5 stars A classic for any age!!!!!
Having first read this book while I was in elementary school, it has been the book that I have rated as one of my favorites all my life (in my 40's). Simple words convey volumes of meaning - very little is written to say so much about peace, love and death. Focus is on what is meaningful in life. Whenever I pick up my volume and read a couple of passages, I realize...

Simple words convey volumes of meaning - very little is written to say so much about peace, love and death. Focus is on what is meaningful in life. The age limit should be removed - it may keep older readers from experiencing life with Platero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Spanish teacher needs this book!, April 10, 2008

1956 Nobel prize winner! A classic that all should know. The poet and the donkey travel to remote villages and they talk about the simple drama of small village life. This is a shorter version- the full version is 138 chapters and this book has nineteen of the most famous works. Get the hardcover of this book because you will need it! They made a later version of this in softcover- you will rue the day of not ordering the hardcover it is a great translation tool. Our reviews are for people like you to make great investments in literature.

I read this book for the first time when I was in elementary school in Buenos Aires, Argentine. I am reading it again at 71 years old, and it is a wonderful story as it was then The book is written in Spanish with an English translation side by side. The translation is fine, but it misses the beauty and romanticism of the Spanish language. Juan Ramon Jimenez is an outstanding author and the use of the Spanish language is incredible. I am glad I decided to read it one more time. It is a classical of the Spanish literature!

This is a slim and attractive volume containing some, but not all, of the charming and touching poems addressed to Platero the donkey. The illustrations are sweet, but it omits some of my very favorite poems, which is why I would recommend a different edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Currier & Ives Calendar in Spanish Prosody..., June 5, 2009
... all sweetness and mellow musings, these lusciously simple prose-poems of nostalgia, in which the writer eulogizes the placid contentment-with-life of his donkey, the title character, are an international classic of Spanish literature but probably lack the 'intensity' ever to capture an anglophone readership. Really, they're not much deeper than The Little House on the Prairie, though the subtle cadences of Juan Ramon Jimenez's Spanish are as artful as Henry David Thoreau's English in Walden Pond.

This edition is a small selection from the full original text. It's enough to give the reader an appetizer, and the bilingual format makes it a useful tool for mastering Iberian literary conventions of language.

Jimenez won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956, one year after Halldor Laxness and one year before Albert Camus. Exalted company! If these three years were a sonata, Jimenez would clearly be the tranquil adagio between the tempestuous andante and the anguished scherzo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, captivating! A beautiful story about friendship!, July 23, 1997

This review is from: Platero y yo / Platero and I (Spanish-English Bilingual Edition) (Hardcover)
A sweet story about Platero (the donkey) and his owner. The descriptive language is so rich and beautiful that this book is used in Argentina's Grammar schools to teach about 'descriptive writing style'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pon una sonrisa en tu cara y una lagrima en tu mejilla..., January 30, 2011
This review is from: Platero y yo / Platero and I (Spanish-English Bilingual Edition) (Hardcover)

The quality of the product is very good. The selection of the poems rather limited. Beautiful poems (i.e., "Angelus", "La flor del camino") were left out from the original selection. In general, I am please with the product.

One concern that I would like to express regarding the "one click" purchase option is that one should be able to choose his/her preferred mailing options. I was in no rush to receive this book and end up paying a shipping over 50% of the product price. No options to edit or preview before finalizing your purchase. I am afraid will avoid the "one click" experience in the future.
