Book Description

March 1996
Surveying Cartier's work in platinum since the early years of the century, this book presents hundreds of jewels, including necklaces with swags of diamonds, platinum-cased watches encrusted with rows of diamond pave settings, and flower-shaped brooches of rubies and emeralds. Perhaps best-known are the diamond-and-platinum panther brooches, necklaces, rings and watches designed for the Duchess of Windsor. The book provides an exploration of a great jewellery house, its treasures, and the people who made them. Illustrations of the jewels are augmented by archival photographs, sketches and working designs, many in colour.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It is difficult to tell whether "Cartier" or "Tiffany" invokes the most awe. Either way, all of the photographs, illustrations, designs, and sketches in this oversize book will inspire, amaze, even strike dumb any and all readers. Cologni and Nussbaum, both Cartier employees, have compiled visual evidence of the strength and beauty of platinum, a precious metal once scorned as a lesser form of silver. Though, naturally, all items emanate from the company's seemingly limitless archives, the information provided is without commercial boundaries; everything you ever wanted to know about platinum--history, mining, other uses, little-known statistics, and notes of famous folks and near celebrities--is included. A companion to three previous volumes on things Cartier: jewelry, accessories and objects, and watches. Barbara Jacobs
