Editorial Reviews

2008 three CD set from one of the most recognized Aussies in the world. For over four decades, Rolf has enjoyed iconic acclaim as a painter, television presenter, champion of children, animals, the arts and of course music! The Platinum Collection is a comprehensive triple disc set featuring 54 tracks from 1960 through to 1997. It includes Rolf's greatest songs - from distinctly Australian songs to traditional bush tracks through to comical ditties. Nicely packaged including liner notes and evocative period images. 54 tracks including his signature tune, 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport'. EMI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Varied collection contains essentials and much more, December 17, 2010
This review is from: Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
There was a time when I wouldn't even consider buying Rolf's music, although I always liked some of his songs. As the years rolled by, I eventually realized that there was much more to his music than appears at first hearing, so when I heard praise for Six white boomers (a Christmas song that I don't remember hearing before), I decided it was worth taking a chance on this triple CD, especially at the price. It didn't cost me more than a single CD that inexplicably omits Two little boys, by far his biggest UK hit. That track is featured here along with Six white boomers, Sun arise, Tie me kangaroo down sport,, Football crazy, Jake the peg and all his other famous songs.

The first CD contains plenty of novelty songs including most of his famous songs. Actually, I don't consider Two little boys to be a novelty song; it has a deeper message about treating others as you'd like them to treat you. Elsewhere, the songs are lightweight and fun, providing a contrast with most of the other music I like.

The second CD is dominated by covers of classic songs including Stairway to heaven, Smoke on the water, Wild thing, Bad moon rising and Honky tonk women among others. Of course, Rolf interprets these classic songs as only he can.

The third CD is dominated by Australian songs. Opening with Sun arise, it includes The Indian Pacific (about a train that crosses the country from the Indian Ocean at Perth to the Pacific Ocean at Sydney), A pub with no beer (a UK hit for Slim Dusty in the fifties), Waltzing Matilda (perhaps the most famous Australian song) and That's what they call the didgeridoo (about an Australian musical instrument) among others. Waltzing Matilda aside, the songs on this CD are generally less well known (at least in my part of the world) than many of the songs elsewhere in this collection. For that reason, they are all the more interesting to me.

Whatever misgivings I have about one or two of the novelty songs, this collection more than compensates by the quality of the other music. Rolf clearly never intended his music to be taken too seriously. Enjoy it for what it is - good fun music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Downunder Songs, February 16, 2011

I used to have the vinyl of this music , so was glad it is now in CD form. I remember listening to him in the 60's. Would have liked to have the song called " In The Wet" included but wasn't, all the others are ones I remember he playing. Would recommend it to a friend.

A very good cd, brings back great memories, good music, good songs, great Christmas gift. My wife just loved listening to it. A lot better than some of the songs that are being made today.
