4.0 out of 5 stars A few surprises, April 3, 2004

This is a good album for Astley completists. Not quite as comprehensive as the U.S. or UK greatest hits releases, but this album has a few tracks that were previously unavailable on North American Astley albums - "I'll Never Set You Free", "Just Good Friends", "I'll Be Fine", "Some Kinda Love". There is also a good short mix of the somewhat popular "My Arms Keep Missing You", whereas the U.S. greatest hits has the 12" mix. The liner notes are brief but interesting; they err however by stating , "After four albums and a string of hit singles, Rick walked away from the record biz with no regrets." They neglect to mention Rick's fifth album, "Keep It Turned On" from 2001, and of course there are no tracks from it here. For the price, you can't go wrong on this one, and you'll get some rare tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Necessary to Own...., October 9, 2009

...if you want to hear a bunch of Rick Astley rarities. Out of the twelve songs on this CD, the last four are nearly impossible to find elsewhere. "Some Kinda Love" is a surprisingly fine cut, and I wonder why it was only issued on the Japanese version of the Free album. The other three rarities were only issued as B-sides during the Stock/Aitken/Waterman period. All were written by Rick and are just as good as his songs which appeared on his first two albums.

Also, if you enjoy "My Arms Keep Missing You", as I do, this CD features the succint, superior original version and not one of the numerous remixes which appear on other greatest hits CDs.

"Together Forever" and "She Wants To Dance With Me" appear in bass and percussion-enhanced remixed form, called "watermixes" after Pete Waterman.

This CD has some faults in that at 12 songs, it is a bit skimpy. Many of Rick's best songs are missing. There is no chronological order. Four of the twelve songs are rarities and had nothing to do with "platinum and gold."

But for the Rick Astley fan, it is worth the quite reasonable price for the four rarities and the original mix of "MAKMY".
