This is the album every "sweet"fan has been looking for,you hear the rumour did brian sing on that one before he left the band well this album has all the answers! There is a nice introduction to the songs on this cd by the sweets guitarest "andy scott" explaining when and where they were recorded and reasons why they were not released at the time.My favorite track is "yesterdays hero" which if released at the time would have been a big hit!Other favorites are"that girl"which has "brian connolly"singing lead vocals with "the sweet"for the very last time,"fire engine","where do we go from here" and"galaxy"are other masterpeices which have been lost for years. This album is a timless classic and is a must for any "sweet" fan or anyone who enjoys rock music from that era.

Sweet are capable of the worst and the best released material. For the worst, read my review of their "Here and Now" DVD... For the best, keep reading! When you think of "rare" you think of stuff that was considered by the group, not good enough to finalise and ultimately "flushed" or vaulted. Or you may expect scratchy old demos with horrible sound quality. NOT IN THIS CASE BABY!!! The sound is great. Of course beeing demos and older recordings, some tape hiss can be heard but it is not omni present. Obviously a great deal of attention was put into remastering the sound and noise reduction. As for the songs themsevlves, some of these versions even surpass their fully polished counterparts that made it to vinyl! Throw in a little humour and unreleased stuff and WOW...The finishing touch is the foot-notes by Andy Scott (guitar) which are nice little introductions/insight to each song. This album although intended for collectioners and die hard SWEET fans (like me) can very well stand up on it's own. If you are like me you must, must, must own this.If you enjoy Rock with unsurpassed vocal harmonies, great guitar riffs, unique drum playing style and solid "Rickenbacker" bass then...What are you waiting for? Put your money down and order this baby!

5.0 out of 5 stars SWEET: Hidden Gems, December 20, 2007

Platinum: Rare is a collection, largely from guitarist Andy Scott's archives, of some of the most beautiful SWEET recordings I have ever heard.
"Yesterday's Hero", written after Brian was booted out, with Steve Priest on lead vocals, is as good as anything SWEET ever released as a single.
A MEMORABLE collection of previously unreleased gems by the SWEET.
A must have for any fan of Brian, Mick, Andy and Steve. The SWEET Rules!
I give it 5 stars only because nothing higher is available. This album deserves more!

5.0 out of 5 stars extra special sweetness..., June 30, 2008

Sweet fans, even the old ones have got to get this. After reading several vague descriptions of this product, I kind of put it off. But now I've been blessed with this fine collection of recordings. From the demo versions to alternate takes to even home recordings it all sounds top-notch. These guys were always studio pros, so its no surprise that the quality is high. You get special moments like last ever takes by Brian Connolly, super tasty drumming from Mick Tucker, experiments from the trio days and basically anything Andy Scott could find of the original line-up.Even the titles you know wont have the same versions. This is the greatest Sweet product to come along, very special indeed. Now if I could find a copy of "A Cut Above The Rest" on cd I'd be real happy.
