5.0 out of 5 stars A great Bargain!
This book is awesome, especially the CDs that came with it. The package is very relevant for me being a webmaster, the books gave me the idea of the different concept of building and implementing a web server in different platforms!

3.0 out of 5 stars Superficial Edition Using HTML3.2 - JAVA1.1 And CGI
This is the classic book that a good observer cannot leave on the shelf. Yes... Exactly!.. See it, it's big, and seems to be saying "Buy me, Buy me!"... But behind a talking book, ther's the far side of the coin... Even if I must admit some of the contents are well studied, many others are really unuseful. The author looses time in teaching a lot of programs...

The author looses time in teaching a lot of programs that surely a good WebMaster already knows (and, in the rare case hi does not, he'd better buy a specific book for each prog.)... Going on, I got disappointed for the Java/CGI section of the book... Too dispersive... Sorry... How's that possible that a so huge and vast argument (Java and CGI programming) can be so lightly shown to the reader?... But now, let's go to the worst side... U probably think that that's a good price... And, opening the book, u surely could think.. "Man, that way I can buy 13 book toghether!!"... Yes, sure... But... Try to read the other 12... An ELECTRONIC book, it's all but a book... No pictures, and a really hard reading challenge... But looking at the whole package, I cannot say "that's a steal!"... So, I give 6 to the book, just for the gifts it has behind the covers...

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable compendium for serious website builders, February 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
I agree this book shouldn't say it covers Java1.1, but I was surprised at the number of negative reviews here, so I went and checked your page on Stanek's book. What seems to be going on is that people who are into web pages that LOOK good love Stanek's book, but people who are into web pages that DO things (like electronic commerce) find useful info in the Que book on subjects such as Web connectivity to databases, database primers, and so forth that Stanek does not seem to cover. I did not buy this book primarily as an HTML book. And even though the Java coverage is dated, it's well illustrated and much more extensive than Stanek's coverage of Java seems to be. Mac users may be annoyed that the CDs are for Windows only.

1.0 out of 5 stars A TOMB LACKING IN ORGANIZATION AND SUBSTANCE. BUY STANEK'S., December 15, 1997

This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
What a huge book that is so poorly organized . Do not spend any time looking through it unless ofcourse you're pumping-up for the Ms /Mr.Olympia competition. "Belive me now and heah me Late".Buy Stanek's web publishing unleashed, it's cheaper and well organized and gives good pointers as to where to start and how to go about publishing on the Web.

Alot of gall saying it covers JAVA 1.1. Alot of breadth but no depth in everything else. weak examples. Excellent door stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars The book shows what is available beyond HTML, October 16, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
One studies HTML, putzes about with a text editor/Netscape, andfinally gets confident enough to buy a nice HTML editor and forgetabout tagging. Tagging taken care of, this lurking feeling that there must be more remains... but what?

Here is a nice broad overview of the tools one needs to create an all the bells and whistles, fully functional, dog and pony show website. In 3d.

Explaining things like JavaScript, VRML, Java, etc. at a level for those have only have heard of them, the book provides examples and tools so the reader can play with, and become familiar with the potential of all these tools.

I was stuck in an HTML rut; it sure was fun and exciting to write my first little 3d world, and incorporate little Java thingies that I actually got working!

The book is not successful as a reference manual for the experienced programmer, and that is not it's intention. It is for the intermediate web page designer with moderate programming ambitions.

The book is presently a little dated, other texts may be better ( consider Html, Cgi, Sgml, Vrml, Java Web Publishing Unleashed, William Stanek,et al.) and $70.00 list seems about $40 too dear.

Still, this book remains a good introduction, and was one of the best texts of it's kind whan it hit the shelves last year. I like it, learned a lot from it, but can not bring myself to buy another copy- having changed jobs, and left the Platinum Edition with it's rightful owner.

1.0 out of 5 stars A load of bunk!, October 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
This book is an oversized paperweight that you can do without. The book has little substance. Most of the material is fluff. I agree with a previous reviewer that said you should get the Web Publishing Electronic Resource Kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it today, August 22, 1997

This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
Although I'm not a fan of Que's "Using..." series this book can't be beat. The discussions are thorough & complete. There are chapters devoted to considerations of page design for both Netscape's & Microsoft's extensions of HTML 3.2. But it is the inclusion of the two CD-ROMs that make the book a great buy. One disc has nearly every site development tool one may need (shareware & freeware, in addition to specially licensed progs). The other disc has twelve Que "Using..." web development books! These cover everything from ActiveX to VBScript. Even if you feel (as I do) Que's books usually leave something to be desired, getting twelve books plus all the web tools you'll need to get started for US$49.00 is too good to pass on

2.0 out of 5 stars Web Publishing Electronic Resource Kit is a better deal!, August 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
Platinum Edition Using HTML, Java and CGI is written by users for users and does NOT have what it takes to get you through the intracies of publishing a home page or Web site. Most of the chapters skim the surface with lots of superficial stuff and no real details.

Sure, the book comes with lots of books on the CD. But once again, these books are designed to help you USE rather than DESIGN/PUBLISH/PROGRAM. So what you end up with is a reference library that covers lots of subjects superficially.

When you look at this book and the comparably priced and MUCH MUCH BETTER Web Publishing Electronic Resource Kit (ISBN: 157521265X) packaged with a print edition of the Web Publishing Unleashed Professional Reference Edition (a 1500+ page book( and 14 books on CD, you see that Platinum Edition is NOT a good choice or a good value. The Web Publishing Electronic Resource Kit covers everything you need to know as a Web publishing, developer and programmer!

5.0 out of 5 stars A considerable resource for Web Site Development, July 25, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 3.2, Java 1.1, and CGI (Hardcover)
The CD Set makes this a valuable asset even though the book is not a definitive text on any of the 3 subjects. Web development is very complicated and can not be covered in depth in any one text which is why the 12 books included on CD makes this text so valuable. You can refer to these other books to get an in depth answer.

This is certainly not a text for begineers nor those looking for quick answers
