4.0 out of 5 stars A good HTML 4 reference, written well
This is a thick book. But never misunderstand the fact that no matter how many pages are included in a computer reference, there will always be information missing for the most advanced user. 3.0 out of 5 stars The Java part isn't bad for just a short overview
I only read the Java part (appr. 200 pages) of the book - so I only judge the book's discussing Java.

All the chapters have been written by the author of Que's Using Java 1.2, Mike Morgan, which has a positive impact on the overall quality of the discussion - far superior to that of, say, Wiley's Java 1.2 and Javascript for C and C++ Programmers. Doesn't beat Core...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good HTML 4 reference, written well, May 23, 2000
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
This is a thick book. But never misunderstand the fact that no matter how many pages are included in a computer reference, there will always be information missing for the most advanced user. HTML 4 is covered in-depth -- and should be the primary reason for wanting to purchase this title, for I have not found a better reference on the subject anywhere. Java 1.2 and XML receive good general overviews. A review previous to mine suggests other, more comprehensive titles, if one wants to delve into the world of Java and XML fully. An excellent suggestion and something that should be taken into account before buying.

Regarding "Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2," it should be noted that for first-time site developers that are looking for an introduction to HTML 4, this is probably not the best way to go. The basics of Web development, such as the best placement for links, graphics, and text, are summarized in the first fifty pages. (First-timers should look for Web development books that cover both HTML 4 and graphic design well.) Following, is a reference-style book that comes in very handy when looking for specific information (that this book covers). I would say, and I think that I share the sentiment of other readers, that this book is geared toward the intermediate to advanced site developer.

Several more aspects worth noting: The style of writing is clear and straightforward, with few grammatical mistakes; there are plenty of examples (code and screen) with good descriptions of why something works; and I would've preferred that the screen shots be in color, but that would probably double the price.

This is a good reference book for HTML 4, that includes an overview of XML and Java. It's not everything, but it's excellent nonetheless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written for someone who wants to learn quickly., July 20, 1999

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
However, even though I originally purchased this book for the XML, I also read the JavaScript chapters and found it to be very informative and easy to read. Unfortunately, there were errors in the sample code. Nevertheless, they were luckily easy to figure out. I pretty much have a full grasp on JavaScript and am now moving on to full Java 1.2. Now, this book shouldn't be used to REALLY learn Java, but it is a good primer for it. Highly suggest getting a full blown book for that. This is an excellent book otherwise. Anyone with experience programming in other languages like C, or VB won't have a single problem with the languages covered in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for any serious web designer!, May 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
With so much content in one book, I can see how readers could get confused. It would be impossible to get it all in just one sitting. In buying this book my goal was to have a single source and reference for web design, covering everything from HTML, Java, Javascript, CGI and more. At first I thought I would have to buy 3-4 different books but then I saw this one. You'll save twice what this book costs on that point alone. Good computer reference books are hard to come by. Some are too simplified and make you feel like an idiot. Some are way too complex and cryptic. This one is somewhere in the middle--not too confusing and not to the point of being cryptic. To me, this is the "end-all" of web books and a must have for any serious web developer! Nuff said!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what i needed, April 11, 2000
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
This book is just what i was looking for. When i was hired to a web company i didnt' even know what HTML stood for. This book takes you deep enough into things you need to make basic html pages, all the way to venturing into basic javascript, and java. Its isn't something you want to buy if you want to learn java, or java script. This book, however, will help you tremendously when it comes to two things: (1) Just learning html, from what it stands for - to creating tuly user friendly webpages, that look and feel good to users. (2) it serves as my offices Number ONE reference for HTML. It has been our reference manual for months now. It has yet to really let us down. IF you want to learn html with no background in computers (even if you didnt' even have a commodore) GET THIS BOOK IF you want a good reliable reference manual for HTML; GET THIS BOOK

This is possibly one of the best HTML books I've ever read! It's an invaluable reference tool and very easy to use. Although a bit of knowledge is needed before diving into some of the harder stuff. Absoulutly Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars excelent book in all respects, April 5, 2001
By
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
I am professional web developer and have been using this book for already a year. It is exellent as an introductory book and then as an everyday reference. For some resons its coverage of JavaScript is not displayed in the book name, but this is the best book I have found about JavaScript and its integrations with browsers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fairly diffinative reference guide!, April 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 (Hardcover)
This book is quite broad. It is designed for the novice to intermediate user. One would need to know a bit about running an enterprise site. The multitude of references (both internal and external) get really confusing. Be prepared to read sections more then once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, February 8, 1999
By A Customer
Great book. Too thick, too heavy and too expensive but has a chapter on almost any web development topic you can think of.

It has become known here as "The Bible". I bought it for a couple of the topics in it and was very happy with its coverage of them. Since then I have looked in it many times and found more useful topics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excllent reference, good intro to DHTML & XML, CD++, December 14, 1998

p5k "patrick" (Southwestern USA...) - See all my reviews
Having read several books on HTML & XML, including the Laura Lemay series, and living most evenings in RFC's and the W3C online documentation, I have found that this is an excellent reference manual to lay flat when I am online and need something quickly explained. The basics of XML are well thought out, as are the intro chapters on JavaScript. I particulary liked the CDROM with it's extensive collection of other QUE titles and source in electronic format (pdf and html).

4.0 out of 5 stars Overview of major web-techniques, October 13, 1998
By A Customer
This book is a bible. It covers every hot topics about Internet developments. It is well-structured and contains a lot of interesting examples. It pinpoints web site and page design techniques, presents HTML, DHTML, scripting languages and the major browse object model, security, ASP, and talks about server-side scripting (CGI,PERL). You have to consider this book as a big reference, giving major guidelines. Moreover it allows you to find a way in the Internet world. Unfortunately, for covering so much subjects, authors have avoided to write down too much details. Sometimes it disappointing. It is a good book for people wanting to find out information about the Internet and its tools.
