Book Description

This brief text assists students in understanding Plato's philosophy and thinking so that they can more fully engage in useful, intelligent class dialogue and improve their understanding of course content. Part of the "Wadsworth Philosophers Series," (which will eventually consist of approximately 100 titles, each focusing on a single "thinker" from ancient times to the present), ON PLATO is written by a philosopher deeply versed in the philosophy of this key thinker. Like other books in the series, this concise book offers sufficient insight into the thinking of a notable philosopher better enabling students to engage in the reading and to discuss the material in class and on paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best brief intro to Plato, February 11, 2001
This review is from: On Plato (Philosopher (Wadsworth)) (Paperback)
As a philosophy professor who specializes in Plato, I was pleased to finally see a short introduction to Plato which in my opinion is the only one of its kind that acknowledges the inherent difficulties in understanding Plato's writings and does justice to him beginning from that premise.

Joel Warren Lidz, Ph.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Of Its Kind, April 30, 2002
This review is from: On Plato (Philosopher (Wadsworth)) (Paperback)
I agree with the earlier reviewer. This is the best short introduction to understanding Plato. I teach Plato and I have found this of immense help in teaching the Dialogues. I have written on Plato's Symposium and Peterman's account of how to interpret Plato is on target. You could spend more and read more well known authors but you won't find a better introduction.
