Review

'For once, a set of photos worth the cover price. British Vogue awarded him 'Best-Up-And-Coming Photographer' at the tender age of 24 and now we can see why. Over the years, Brit snapper Platon Antoniou has shot everyone, from skinheads in North Carolina and mourners of the victims of September the 11th, to famous actors, politicians, sportsmen, fashion designers and musicians. Now he's put together an eclectic mix of his portraits in this stunning collection. A-list celebrity mugshots include Jude Law, Keanu Reeves, Pamela Anderson and, of course, David Beckham ... Whether you're a budding David Bailey or just appreciate really gorgeous photos, this is definitely one book worth owning.' (Heat Magazine) 'Platon's photos have captured people - famous, infamous, anonymous - in ways that reveal them, in ways that unveil them, in ways that leave them open to entirely new interpretations. It's an odd thing, Platon's photography: He starts out with lives of unimaginable complication and ends up with the simplicity of innocence. He is an artist working in a commercial form and that combination makes him the most distinctive photographer at work today.' (Esquire) 'Intimate anecdotes in the form of ... handwritten notes, ... combined with powerful images, will make you want to give this 'coffee-table' book pride of place in any living room.' (Expresso) 'His work suggests an unusual intimacy.' (GQ) 'Part personal scrapbook, part cultural documentary, the book features the best of Platon's work.' (Mediabistro.com) 'You can almost see the force fields surrounding the cultural icons whose portraits appear in Platon's Republic (Phaidon). Powerful poses and nervy adjacencies (John Kerry, meet Karl Rove) give this book its quick-hit energy, as do raw, emotive images of neo-Nazi skinheads or agonized mourners at Princess Diana's funeral. Among Platon's "Scrapbook notes" are clues about how he got his shots: by manipulating his subjects, but also by succumbing to their will.' (O "The Oprah Magazine") 'Finding unexpected angles has become a specialty for Platon, a young British star of portrait photography. His first book, playfully titled Platon's Republic (Phaidon), is alive with the kind of vitality and freshness that's often missing in the static world of celebrity portraiture.' (Planet) 'A photo book that practically jumps off the coffee table and into your lap.' (Metro, Wednesday)

About the Author

Platon (b.1968) shoots fashion, portrait and documentary work for publications such as Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Esquire, GQ, Premiere, Arena, The Face, Nylon and Newsweek. He has photographed campaigns for Nike, Levis, IBM, Ray Ban, Issey Miyake, Moschino, Kenneth Cole and Motorola. His portraits are the result of unique access to his sitters and the desire to create a new range of cultural heroes. Platon is dynamic and dedicated: his portraits are an unusual mix of grit and gloss. Unlike any other photographer of his calibre, he bridges the gap between the US and the UK, epitomizing the sense of the word 'international'.

As I flipped through this coffee table book extraordinaire, I was greeted by stunning images of people as diverse as George Bush, Sr., and Pamela Anderson - and loved every minute of it!!!

Every page serves as a window into the soul of Platon's subjects...well known and not so well known - but all carrying a measure of celebrity in their own right. This is a beautiful, must-have collection of photographs of icons from the US (Samuel L. Jackson, Marilyn Manson & Donald Sutherland), UK (David Bekham and others) & neighboring countries (i.e., CANADA's premier poet laureate Leonard Cohen).

Neither this edition nor its subjects should be overlooked. Simply stunning!

I saw Platon's recent portrait of Elliot Spitzer and wanted to see more of his work. I was very surprised to read the previous negative reviews of this book based on the quality of his work; but for $2.95 used, I figured I would check it out. I'm glad I did. The work contained in the book is extensive, unique, and awe inspiring. I love portrait photography, and Platon's creative use of wide-angle lenses and lighting techniques inspire me. I'm simply amazed at the amount of work captured in this single book. Putting it all together gives his work and vision more power than the single images displayed in countless magazines. If you love portrait photography, do yourself a favor and get this book...especially if you can get it at the ridiculously low used price I got it for.

If you know Platon, you know exactly what you're buying. The photos are incredible and thanks to book size it's just a joy to go through them. Simple.

There's more to this book than just low angle wide angle lens portraits. If one simply flips through the book, yes, one can come away thinking his work is simplistic and easy. His lighting style is very simple and I believe this is so he can concentrate on bringing his subject's personality out; which he does very well. Each image includes a description by Platon and this really helps bring the images to life.

Also, it's interesting to note that now, many years since the publication of this book, Platon is still (in 2010) doing all his work on film.
