Book Description

Rogue Warrior May 1, 2000

AS A U.S. NAVY SEAL, RICHARD MARCINKO KNEW NO LIMITS -- AS THE ROGUE WARRIOR, HE OBEYS NO RULES

Through seven blockbuster New York Times bestsellers in the Rogue Warrior series, Richard Marcinko and John Weisman have given their readers untold thrills -- and their villains no mercy. Now the Rogue Warrior writes a whole new set of rules for the shadowy world of Black Ops as he embarks on his most explosive adventure yet -- a volatile tale of double-dealing and international intrigue that blows the lid off today's geopolitical scene.

ROUGE WARRIOR®: ECHO PLATOON

Dangerous times require dangerous men. And there isn't a man alive more deadly than the Rogue Warrior. Called once more to his country's service, Captain Richard "NMN" Marcinko must undertake a critical mission: uncover the hidden motives and players behind the recent attempts at the destabilization of Azerbaijan, the tiny former Soviet republic that holds the key to the oil-rich Caspian Sea.

An overland pipeline to the West has been planned, and both Russia and Iran want to control the flow. But others have their own interests in the region, including bilious billionaire Steve Sarkesian, one of the world's richest and most influential men. The Rogue knows the man is involved, but just how he ties in with the Russkies and Arabs isn't clear. And just who else stands to benefit from toppling the Azerbaijani government?

The answer is out there somewhere, and Marcinko is going to find it. Pulling together a platoon of his best SEALs, the Rogue Warrior races to the heart of the Middle East, revealing festering layers of treachery and greed that threaten to choke off the black gold that is America's lifeblood. Confronted by well-trained terrorists and false-faced bureaucrats, the Rogue does what he does best -- breaking rules and cracking heads -- until the only thing left standing is justice.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Rogue Warrior--former SEALs officer Marcinko's self-image in all his coauthored books, autobiographical as well as fictional--returns in another exercise in hairy-chested readability. This time Marcinko is working, in the oil-rich Caspian Sea area, against efforts to destabilize the region to the joint benefit of the Iranians and the Russians, partners in an odd but entirely too plausible alliance. His enemies include former KGB general Oleg Lapinov and ruthless billionaire Sarkesian, not to mention Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong, it will"--known in Marcinko shorthand as "Mister Murphy"), faulty equipment, poisonous spiders, the U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan, and hostile shooters of various degrees of proficiency. There are friends: the Israeli Ari Gal, female marine Major Ashley Evans, and the usual assortment of armed sidekicks of high proficiency and extreme willingness to follow Marcinko into the jaws of hell. Marcinko details the process of leading them there in customary mouth-drying, palm-moistening, exceptionally informative style. New readers must, of course, make allowances for the f-word to an author who writes about close quarters' combat from Marcinko's unusually intimate perspective. Hardened Rogue Warrior fans will just salute and read. Roland Green

From Kirkus Reviews

A sixth blood-and-guts novel in the series spun off from Marcinkos bestselling (nonfiction) memoir of his career as a Navy SEAL (Rogue Warrior, 1992). As the tale begins, our hero is swimming toward an oil platform in the Caspian Sea where Iranian terrorists have taken the Western workers hostage. Hes loaded down with 70 pounds of equipment (pistol, submachine gun, the usual) and covered with crude from an oil slickhey, nothing a little Bombay Sapphire wont fix. Marcinko is there to help the Azerbaijan army get rid of the baddies, but American Ambassador Marybeth Madison doesnt like him or his tactics. Thats okay, he doesnt like her either, and Article 88 (which forbids military personnel to disparage civilian authorities) has never kept him from voicing his opinions. It all gets more complicated from there on, with the usual rip-snorting action sequences and acronyms aplenty, plus a glossary for the confused. The first-person narration is as mannered as a Restoration comedy, but fans will enjoy the customary blend of heroics and politically incorrect commentary. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rogue Warrior: Echo Platoon, May 17, 2000

Hey! I'm a girl, a pilot, and a SpecOps fan. Marcinko may be rough, gruff, and calloused, but there is little doubt that he is not intimately acquainted with his subject. Read Echo! It is one of his best--entertaining and educational. It won't let you down, and neither would His Team. Best to the Borderline Godfather. I'm waiting for the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doom on You, Dickie! You've Done it Again!, May 9, 2000
This review is from: Echo Platoon (Rogue Warrior) (Hardcover)
You like him or hate him -- no in between. Politically incorect, profane and funny as hell! One of the best "Rogue Warrior" series in years. Will he run out of bad guys? Stay tuned. The only bummer is that now we've got to wait another year for the next version of the Roguester to arrive. WTF, A rollicking, action-packed good time with interesting asides and commentaries on the Nature of Warriordom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of this Series yet!, June 16, 2000
This review is from: Echo Platoon (Rogue Warrior) (Hardcover)
These are the men I want to "help" me if I'm ever a hostage! This was interesting, excting, scary & sad book. MAJOR page turner. The doom on Dicky verbage can be mind boggling sometimes... but never dull. It's apparent that the writer knows the whole Politics, Special Ops...& Seals like the back of his hand or other part of his anatomy(his words, not mine)...Never candy coating the truth when he's wrong or made a mistake or soft soaping grief. I enjoy the reappearing Seals, Friends & Villians from the past, as this is a small world, with lots of paths that cross & recross. Though I never get the impression "Good conquers Evil" here, just stomps it back into place for awhile. It's enough to make me feel just a wee bit safer.
