Book Description

November 2000 0791447464 978-0791447468
An in-depth investigation of the views of justice present in the opening sections of Plato's Republic.

Plato's Introduction to the Question of Justice uncovers the heart of the Platonic analysis of justice by focusing on the crucial opening sections of the Republic. Stauffer argues that the dialectical confrontations with ordinary opinion presented in these sections provide the basis for Plato's view of justice, and that they also help to show how Plato's thought remains relevant today, especially as a rival to Kantianism.

This review is from: Plato's Introduction to the Question of Justice (Paperback)
Stauffer has opened my eyes anew to Plato. It's a great book that should be read by smart students (of all ages) interested in the question of justice and seeking a more profound understanding of it's roots in the Western tradition. Warning: reading this book can make common opinions seem facile making tea with those annoying associates that much more unbearable. A cure I found is in transferring the meme's embedded in Stauffer's book into their heads. The thoughts provided by this book seem to have the positive long term affect of making them more reflective people. Bravo to the author for this ammunition of wisdom and may we see more from what is clearly a budding great mind in the future.
