More About the Author

One sure thing that can be said about Sondra Bernstein is that she has no idea how to relax. Her passion for the hospitality business is her driving force and continues to inspire her to create and recreate. She opened her first restaurant in 1997 after four years at Viansa Winery and many successful years in restaurant management in both Los Angeles & Philadelphia.

Currently, Sondra is the Proprietor/CEO of the girl & the fig and ESTATE restaurants in Sonoma & the fig café & winebar in Glen Ellen. She is the author of the "the girl & the fig Cookbook" published by Simon & Schuster in April 2004. Her gourmet FIGfood product line is available nationwide under the girl & the fig label. With a passion for food and wine, the trip from Philadelphia to Sonoma County was inevitable. Having restaurants in Sonoma County is a tribute to the efforts of the farmers, ranchers, cheese makers and, of course, grape growers & vintners in this bountiful landscape. When she is not busy working on her restaurants menus, accounting or marketing, she can be found playing in one of her many projects including; the Très Bonnes Années label wine, The Farm Project, her second cookbook, development of the girl & the fig iphone application and the company's new website to name a few.

Not a big deal, the rest of the book is clear and well laid out, and I eventually found what I was looking for.

My wife and I just visited Sonoma, CA at the end of May 2012, where we happened upon The Girl & The Fig through Yelp reviews. We enjoyed the experience enough that we drove my parents back from the bay area a week later. I noticed the book while we were at the restaurant but didn't buy it at the time. I previously purchased a restaurant cookbook at the Herb Farm near Seattle. The Herb Farm cookbook is one of my favorites, so I was excited to look up this book when we got home from California. I've had Plats du Jour now for a few weeks and absolutely love it. This is a pretty substantial book. Though a lot of it is stories, history, and pictures, it is still packed with recipes. We were thrilled to find the restaurant's lavender creme brulee recipe. Personally, I think this book is a steal, especially at its price.

The only negative thing I have to say is that I had a hard time figuring out what "blended oil" was, called for in many of the recipes. This can mean so many things and often refers to generic vegetable oil. Later, I found the explanation on page 18. I tend to be a person who casually flips through a cookbook and the recipes don't direct the reader to page 18. In fact, "Oil, blended" is in the glossary but it refers the reader to page 311 where it's not mentioned once. Not a big deal, the rest of the book is clear and well laid out, and I eventually found what I was looking for.

Just returned home from a trip to Sonoma, now after reading this I want to go back and see some of the farms and shops they feature in the book. Not just a cookbook, this is a fantastic gift too!,

I found this book very approachable. I've made a couple of things out of it so far and they have been very good. This book, like Sondra's last book, are safe bets for trying new dishes when friends are coming over for dinner. I like to flag the recipies I want to try when I get a new cookbook. With this one, almost every page is flagged! I can't wait to try more. It's book is also beautiful - great pictures and wonderful tips throughout the book.

Lush photos, unique recipes, "meet the producers" stories about the local suppliers make for a good read and a clear window into the Sonoma food scene.

The pictures are beautiful and with each section, there are cocktails included. I originally saw this in Napa Valley at a winery for the full price then came home and ordered it from my trusted Amazon and less than half the price!
