Where to travel if you want to get laid, May 10, 2011
I tried to find the book in French to get the full impact of the writing of Houllebecq.
But I was not lucky.
I am not surprised that Houllebecq is not very popular in the US. The picture he paints of our world today, created by a capitalism out of control, is so depressing and at the same time realistic, that people do not like to look into the mirror he is holding in front of us.
I was interested in this particular book because it deals with world-wide sex tourism. And as I live in the US city where lonely people come in droves to get laid and a whole industry is built around pole-dancing, night-clubs, brothels and street-hookers I was interested in reading about this phenomenon from an European perspective.
As a woman I wonder if women will eventually buy sex as casually as men do, but I have never been excited by Chippendale performances or pretty boys.
Houllebecq's outlook for women is even worse than for men and I have to say I am glad that I am already a senior citizen.
I wish there would be more books like this describing life today.
