I bought the Platypus to replace a 2-year old Camelbak bladder that had gotten all chemical-tasting on me. This one was an improvement- I didn't taste the plastic until the water had been in the bladder for about 16 hours, and even then it was slight.

I'm not sure I love the zip-top closure- the Camelbak's twist-on closure felt more secure. I do like the on/off mechanism of the mouthpiece though. You just twist the mouthpiece. The Camelbak has a little lever that I could never remember what position was open and what was closed. Compared to the Camelbak, the bladder isn't as pliable, but I don't feel a difference when the backpack is on my back.

If you're going to be using this in a Camelbak pack, know that the top (where the closure is) is just a little bit too wide, so you'll have to angle it in order to close the backpack. There's no hook on top to keep it upright in your pack. Problem solved- I took the cheapy hose clip from the Platypus (it's the type of clip you'd use to clip a work ID badge to your shirt) and used that to clip the top of the bag to the loop in the Camelbak. You could also do this with a zip tie or a velcro strip.

All in all, I'm happier with the Platypus than I was with the Camelbak bladder, mostly because the water tastes so much better. Even my dog refused to drink the Camelbak water on a hot day, it tasted so bad. Now we're both a lot happier. I'll give an update if this changes so you'll have an idea of how long this bladder will last.

I bought two of these in the 3L size. They work perfectly. No complaints at all! My worries of leakage (think of a zip lock bag filled with water) are all gone. The big zip makes them easy to fill, clean, and dry. The zip stays shut! The handle/zipper makes it easy to get the bladder zipped, and is a secure handle. I keep one in my Teton Sports Explorer 4000 backpack and one in my Osprey Stratos 24 day pack. To make it easier to get the bladders into a full pack, I made socks for the bladders from the sleeves of a long-sleeve XL excercise shirt. The spandex-type material of the sleeves really helps to get the bladders in and out. No sewing skills needed, just cut the sleeves from the torso, and the bladder slides right in. Instant bladder sock!

It is very convenient that the bladder doesn't leak when the tube is disconnected! You can leave the tube threaded into your pack while you remove the bladder to fill it up. The tube is plenty long for both packs. I ended up shortening it about four inches so that I could get the bite valve rotated just the way I liked it.

We got the 3 liter Platy bladders as a replacement for the 2 liter bladders that came with our hiking packs. What a difference! That extra liter really comes in handy on hot, cold or dry days. I also appreciate that this bladder doesn't impart a funky taste to our water like the original bladder did. I love the large Zip opening... really makes filling and cleaning very easy (although the anti-microbial treatment means I don't have to clean it often).

I am definitely a fan of this product. It works very well, and doesn't leak. I recently used this just on an overnight backpacking trip and it was great. The handle on top was especially handy when going to get water from about a mile away when I didn't want to take my pack.

The bite valve works very well, and I didn't have any trouble getting a very good amount of water out of it. I see how it could be an issue if you have no hands free, but it works well when you can easily put it up to your mouth.

I can see nothing wrong with this bag - the zip closure works well, it doesn't leak, I can easily get water, and the tube even disconnects for easy removal of the bladder from your pack. It's a great product.

UPDATE

I just wanted to let everyone know that I've got the same bladder from 2 years ago, and it still works fantastically. I haven't been able to go out on any long backpacking trips, but I've used it extensively for day hikes. Despite not being the cleanest with my bladder, it has never gotten mildew. My boyfriend has worked his way through several different hydration bladders, and even after using all of those, I definitely prefer my BigZip.

Was in the middle of a 10+ mile desert hike recently and noted my back was feeling wet. Found a leak where a crease crossed the outer seam. Fortunately, it was near the bottom and I was able to invert the bag and finish up without any drama. This problem is inevitable because of the design. Starting to notice wear at the same location on my 2L bag. I ended up buying another one but make sure you check for wear at the seam before any extreme hikes or you could be in for some unwanted excitement.

Pros:

-Unexpectedly, the zip lock works well
-quick opening and closing because of the zip
-large bladder mouth
-twist lock for the bite valve
-leak free valve (so far)
-detachable tubing

Cons:
-The main selling feature to me was the claim that it's "taste-free" according to reviews here and its website. But, it still tastes like plastic even after washing/rinsing. I give it 3 stars because taste is my main reason for buying this product.

I would still recommend this product.
