Editorial Reviews

Review

"Readers who enjoy whirlwind romances with plenty of sex and laugh-out-loud humor will love every installment, and another is due out in the fall."—Booklist (Starred review)
"Pure rocker perfection in every single way…Play is a splendid marriage of romance and comedy, a possibly even better book than its stellar prequel, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes their love stories with a side of giggles."—Natasha Is a Book Junkie

"Kylie Scott is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors at combining funny with sexy, and I can't wait to read more from her. Play is a definite must-read book!"—The Smut Books Club

"Mal is taking us all by storm…go buy this book. Seriously. You won’t regret it." – Fiction Vixen

"Play is a sweet new adult romantic contemporary that focuses on the relationship between an out of control rock star and a down on her luck young woman. Ms. Scott uses her skills to paint an engaging, quite humorous, and at times heartbreaking picture of first love as she builds a swoon worthy romance."—Smexy Books

"Play does not disappoint! It’s sexy, naughty, and hilarious with a side note of serious that makes it all so real. I’m an affirmed Stage Dive groupie and I’m ready to follow those men on tour wherever they go! Rock on!!" –Up All Night Book Blog

"Ever had that one character that captured your heart the minute he came in the story? Yeah…Mal is definitely that character. I’m now officially addicted to Stage Dive. I highly recommend it to readers out there that enjoy rock star romance books and the New Adult/Contemporary Romance genre." – Book Lovin’ Mamas

"I absolutely loved Play, and the minute I finished it I wanted to read it again just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. With each book in this series, I become more attached to the characters and more enamored with author Kylie Scott." –Guilty Pleasure Book Reviews

The boys of Stage Dive are BACK! I have been so excited for this book. After reading Lick….and then meeting Kylie….joining her groupies & seeing all the Play teasers and excerpts that she shared, this book was definitely in my top 5 most anticipated reads of this year! I was NOT DISAPPOINTED!! It turned out better than I could have imagined.
Play is Malcolm ‘Mal’ Erickson’s story and is told from the point of view of Anne, who literally is the girl next door! Through some crazy circumstances Mal moves in with Anne and convinces her to play his pretend Girlfriend until the band goes on tour. Anne agrees….and why not?! Mal is HOT, she has had a crush on him for FOREVER and more importantly…she needs the money. Mal is his totally over the top self, which is a great counterpart for Anne’s stick in the mud ways. Mal & Anne have great chemistry and interactions. They are HILARIOUS! I really loved the texting back and forth, the sly innuendos, Mal talking about the size of his ‘stick’, the bathtub scene…..ok not going to lie….I loved the whole damn book!
Here is the part that surprised me, Mal has a soft side. A vulnerable side, that he is trying to desperately hide from Anne and his band mates. The problem….Anne. She will not let him hide part of himself away. This is when the story gets angsty. Mal is dealing with some serious things….it causes him to be a bit manic and drink too much (which is totally understandable). I love that he uses his drums to center himself. I love that he also learns to lean on Anne, who is an amazingly supportive person. Of course there are mistakes made along the way, conclusions drawn that hurt feelings (what book would be good without these things?) but Anne & Mal start to realize that there may be more between them then just a pretend relationship.

I was gifted a copy in exchanged for my honest opinion.

So if I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. Probably 10 or more. It was probably the funniest and most entertaining book I have ever read. No joke. I tried sooo hard to read this book slow. I did NOT want it to end. I seriously hope Kylie writes more Mal. I want to read Lizzy's story though. But I need more Mal. I love the other band mates and I LOVED Lick and David. But Mal is my favorite. He is CRAZY, fun, funny, eccentric, loving, sweet, caring, gentle, hot. He is the WHOLE package! Anne is just as weird and I LOVED her!! perfect for Mal. We got to see more about Stage Dive and of course that was fun and entertaining this group is amazing and such a great group to have as friends. I honestly did not think I would love this more than Lick. But I did and you will to. I promise! I will read this over and over and over. Especially if you are having a bad day, this helps! it helped me! Kylie Scott knows how to write an odd ball fairy tale. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Let's get to the story. A little I can give.

We meet Anne a girl who is odd and damaged and just found out her roommate screwed her over. She decides to head on over to a Stage Dive party with her friends and she meets the fun loving Malcolm Ericson. Right away Mal see's Anne is hurt and shows her a kindness she has not felt in awhile and also showed her how utterly insane he is lol. Just what the doctor ordered. They have a good time and she walks away a tiny piece of her stays with Mal. Mal needs a place to stay and he decides to move on in with Anne, since she also needs a roommate. These two hit it off and start seeing each other. But they both have pasts, demons and secrets. Mal also goes on tour in not long.

Sweet Jesus Mal I've missed your a**, "yeeah, your name," he drawled. "The point of me telling you my name, even when you already knew it, was so you'd give me yours. That's how these things go." I mean a drunk Mal is just something else, "liar," he taunted in a soft voice. "You're totally thinking of me with no pants on." And the text messages he sends to Ann sweet lord I have to give the girl props for putting up with that, "when are you on the rag? David said to find out if you want cupcakes or ice cream." He's fiercely protective, "you woke her, a**wipe." For once, Mal didn't sound the least bit light and easy as he gave Reece hell. "Do you have any idea how stressful s***'s been for her lately? Plus she had to work late last night." I have to say I enjoyed Mal's book more than David's probably because of all the playfulness that is Mal, "nonsense. We just effed so hard we broke your bed. They wish they were us. The natural order of sexual status has been restored." We both laughed. It was all so ridiculous." I mean he sometimes does have to straighten things out with Ann, "you want a song? No problem. I'll ask Davie to write you one later." He put a hand to either side of the bathroom doorway. "I know you wanted to go for it last night. But I wanted you sober. Now you are. I want you. You want me. Let's eff." And when Mal is disoriented it is damn hilarious, "why'd you put my hand down your panties while I was asleep? What's that about?" he mumbled. "Christ woman. You're out of control. I feel violated." Can't wait to see whose next in this series.
