Many of the really important books are surprisingly slim and deceptively simple. This is such a volume. Mance presents just a few solos covering major and minor blues in a few keys. That's all -- but it's a lot: each solo breaks out into a cornucopia of phrases and licks which, after being recombined and transposed for awhile, amount to a deep lesson in how to think. The material is so terse and well-conceived, it permeates one the way Hemingway short stories do. Cross your fingers for this to come back into print!
