5.0 out of 5 stars THE Standard by which others will be judged!
This is a MUST for jazz enthusiasts. Like anything exceptional, most people won't like it, so don't bother playing this CD for friends unless they share your tastes in music. Excellence in any endeavor has a narrow audience, but for those who appreciate greatness, its appeal cuts deep. This recording cuts to the bone!! McFerrin is precise, inventive, and able to vocalize...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not McFerrin's Best
I really enjoy Bobby McFerrin and delight in his vocal jazz. My wife and I will be going to another McFerrin concert in a few weeks. However, this is not my favorite album of his. For those looking for a good introduction I would recommend 'The Voice'.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Standard by which others will be judged!, October 13, 2000

McFerrin is precise, inventive, and able to vocalize like an instrumentalist with an immense tonal range and expressiveness. He has no peers. And Chic Corea plays jazz piano with instrument mastery usually reserved for world-class classical pianists, but it's REALLY jazz, not Yoyo Ma (a master of the cello, world class) trying to play jazz, displaying amazing musicianship, but showing he just doesn't understand what jazz really is. By contrast, both Corea & McFerrin are masters of technique but are jazz masters as well.

Most of the cuts are note for note arrangements of earlier jazz classics: Spain (Miles Davis);Blues Connotation( Ornette Coleman). " Even From Me" is a collaborative composition by Corea And McFerrin based on a 4 note vocal bass riff repeated over & over, creating a foundation upon which each weave their unique jazz creations. The entire selection of pieces sound improvisational, but are tightly arranged.

Perhaps the best reason this is a "must have" recording is that the music is FUN. It makes you feel wonderful. It's not depressing bluesy (that can be good stuff too). It's not the frenetic dissonant cacophony of Thelonius Monk. It's just the best piano/vocal stuff I've heard. And it's fun-- they just play.

Just buy it. Don't worry, you'll be happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy, March 15, 2002
This review is from: Play (Audio CD)
I once played "Spain", the Corea tune on this CD for my girlfriend years ago when this CD first came out, and on the first three notes of Bobby Mcferrin's entrance after a poetic introduction by Corea, she burst into joyous laughter. This CD will make everyone from the straight ahead jazz purist to the every now and again jazz appreciator to a six year old child laugh and dance. There is beautiful work on this CD...and hearing it now is a reminder of what is missing on the radio today...when you comin' back Bobby M?

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING, April 25, 2005

It's very hard to find CD's like this here in the Philippines. And when I got a copy of this album, the first thing that I could say was "AMAZING!!!" Indeed it's amazing to hear perfectly talented people like McFerrin and Corea in one concert together. Full of improvisations, serious and comic, technical, but full of feelings, what more can I say? This album is perfectly complete. Wish I could watch them live here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible!, July 14, 2006

Not sure how I missed this for so long. I've drifted in & out of listening to jazz over the last decade or so. I just reimmersed to find Play. What an incredible collection of musical genius. Bobby McFerrin continues to amaze me. Not only with his vocalization (not vocals) talent but also his inventive nature along with the steady injection of fun & joy in his music. I've had this CD for a few weeks now, and it doesn't leave my car player. The riffs, runs, scat...all of it just keeps flowing through my head.

I agree with the previous reviewers. Play is a must-have for anyone who truly loves music.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is simply extraordinary..., December 25, 2008

I am not using these words lightly. The delicate, sensitive touch of the piano is the perfect backdrop for McFerrin's instrumental lyricism in Round Midnight.
