4.0 out of 5 stars I like this one better, August 17, 2002

Maybe the reason I like this one better is that I don't want a whole CD to be "Smooth and Relaxing". This one is not as "smooth" and to me that is a good thing. While the first one had some catchy songs it was also more low key and the songs had a similar groove. This one pushes the envelope a bit more and gives us songs that don't all sound similar. Slam Dunk is good, but the standard stuff..then he really opens it up with "From The Top" and "Rewind" is equally energized. Belle Maria with Peter White again steps away from the standard fare and the beautiful ballad at the end, With You I Believe, is a refreshing step away from studio technology. Pure instrumentation and played from the heart. I could have done without the cover of "Lets Get It On" a song I have simply heard too many times over the last 30 years and am bored with. But the other plus for this CD is that except for one background vocal it is all instrumental! I love the artists who can play it down the center commercially and give radio what they want without compromising the quality of the music or putting us to sleep..EG has done that with this one.

I also have to give some props to the cover art..the woman on the cover is a beautiful, confident, healthy looking woman wearing clothes that real people wear. Refreshing after seeing so many covers with sultry, pouting, extremely thin half-dressed women!

5.0 out of 5 stars First time, January 10, 2003
This review is from: Play Date (Audio CD)
This CD was my introduction to EUGE GROOVE. Considering I thought the name of the performer was HUGE GROOVE, I was not dissapointed to find out differently. Euge Groove was a HUGE hit with me. Slam Dunk is the head boppinist, sitting in your car even after you get home to finish listening it-ist tune that I've heard in a while. GROOVE ONNNNNN.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make a Date with Play Date...You will be Delighted, July 22, 2002
This review is from: Play Date (Audio CD)
Euge Groove returns with his sophomore album of great smooth jazz in Play Date. All the tracks reels me in each time I put the CD into the spin. Although fans of Groove's debut album might not totally agree that this 2nd album is as 'smooth' as the first, it actually takes a few spins of the CD to get one into the groove. Slam Dunk in particular, throws the listener into the highs of Groove's funky smooth jazz before Goona Be Alright brings the listener down into the deep realms of sultry smooth jazz ecstasy. By the time one gets to the end of the CD, you will have realised that Groove has really done a good job again. The worth of a contemporary jazz musician is to push the boundaries of his art beyond the limits of pre-defined notions and expectations, just like the art of jazz improvisation. Smooth Jazz is no exception. The grooves have to be constantly expanded, the funk has got to set in differently with each turn, and the flow could turn swirl smoothly. Euge Groove has in such a way, grown beyond the confines of smooth jazz in his 2nd album. And listening to the way his saxophone moves in unison with his groove is testament to the greatness in his art.
