Editorial Reviews

2007 release that contains, for the first time on CD, two superlative albums by Les Brown and His Band of Renown in their entirety. Both LPs are dedicated to the music of the great composers. The first one, Play the Gershwin Bandbook (1961), is entirely devoted to the works of George Gershwin. The second, The Explosive Sound of Les Brown (1963), subtitled Swinging' the Classics, presents new swinging arrangements of the works of several classical music composers. 24 tracks. Lonehill.

Format: Audio CD
These two albums were Columbia releases originally, and sounded good. Both are presented here in a highly flawed manner. The Gershwin Bandbook album is in mono, despite the fact that it was originally available in stereo. There is no excuse for this. The Explosive Sound of Les Brown is in stereo, but BOTH albums are clearly transferred from vinyl records rather than master tapes. The are fairly clean transfers, but they are obviously from records as sources. There is no licensing statement on the CD inserts. While I draw no firm conclusions as to the legitimacy of this release, it does seem to me that most legitimate reissues are able to get master tapes as their source material.

the Brown band was disciplined and stayed with a formula arrangement in place. this cd shows the les brown band at its best the choice of music
is excellent. I don't believe the les brown band would ever disappoint
anyone musically or by choice of selections.
Incidently listen to England's Ted Heath and you will think its les Brown.
Heath was no fool.
Finally Brown surrounded himself with excellent sidemen, Ted Nash, Don Fagerqist, Frank Rosolini, Ron Scott, etc
