Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-As in their previous appearance in Ten Out of Bed (Candlewick, 1996), a boy and his stuffed-animal friends turn bedtime into playtime. While the child counts to 10, his 9 toys scramble for hiding places and are discovered one by one. The detailed, full-color illustrations recall the expressiveness of the artist's work in Big Brother, Little Brother (Candlewick, 1997), as the youngster's face shows the puzzlement and delight inherent in a game of hide-and-seek. Young listeners will enjoy studying the pictures for the hint of a zebra's eye or the tip of a porcupine's quill that reveal the animals' locations. The text, unfortunately, does not quite match the smooth innocence of the artwork. At times rhyming, at times not even rhythmic, the narrative is a bit awkward. Purchase this title where more not-quite-ready-for-bed stories are needed or where Penny Dale's work is popular.

From Kirkus Reviews

Bedtime turns into a gleeful game of hide-and-seek in this romp from Dale (Ten Out of Bed, 1994). All settled in but not quite settled down, a boy suggests one final game be played before bed. His nine stuffed companions cooperate with alacrity and hide while ``little one'' counts to ten. Then the fun begins as bedroom and kitchen are diligently searched for those hiding. With loud exclamations of ``BOO!'' every time someone is found, the child locates each friend and enlists its help for the rest of the hunt. Dale's softly colored, intricate illustrations provide subtle clues to the animals' hiding places, offering children the opportunity to search along with the boy. When even the tiniest of the friends has been found, each animal is tucked in with a tender good-night. This gently reassuring tale is ideal for reading aloud, sending sleepyheads off with a little merriment and a lot of care. (Picture book. 2-5) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars endless pleasure for parents and children, August 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Play Hide-and-Seek (Hardcover)
A beautiful book for children! There are elements of surprise and the children have the opportunity to look for toys that are hiding. Penny Dale is so clever to leave a paw poking out here or an ear there to raise the children's imagination as to what animal is hiding. Children can learn the names of different toy animals and it teaches children to count as well. then, who is still missing? buy this book and parents will have endless hours of fun ... and the kids too! what a lovely book to cuddle up and share with your children and you will never tire of it.

The illustrations in this book are outstanding. They definately capture the reader's eye (young or old). Also the language in this book is terrific. As a teacher of hearing impaired children, I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ready or not, it's time for bed!, April 16, 2000
This review is from: Ten Play Hide-and-Seek (Hardcover)
A great bedtime book, it shows a toddler getting ready for bed by playing hide-and-seek with a playful collection of stuffed animals. Your child will enjoy the search for his hidden friends and you can help by giving clues! The story is also a wonderful way to introduce your toddler to numbers and counting. A nice companion to "Ten Out of Bed", also by Penny Dale.
