Editorial Reviews

2010 full-length from San Francisco's Fresh & Onlys. After two albums and too many singles and EPs to count, The Fresh & Onlys deliver their most solid outing yet. Recorded by studio whiz Tim Green during an eight-day session, Play It Strange marks the band's first recording in an actual recording studio. The results are nothing short of incredible. For those unfamiliar with The Fresh & Onlys, their sound draws from jangly Psychedelia, Morricone-style Western twang, dark vibes a la Bad Seeds / Gun Club, melodic '60s sunshine pop and a hint of garage rock swagger. While this disparate list may look strange on paper, it makes perfect sense when you hear it.

Play it Strange features a unified aesthetic and sound, but the real strengths of the album come through in its consistently rewarding, understated experimentation. The album is accessible but differentiated, which is why I return to it. The singer has a unique baritone, and an excellent melodic and lyrical sensibility. Passages and notes will stick with you all day. I would recommend buying Waterfall, and if you like that song, getting the rest of the album. You won't find anything else exactly like it, but you will find the same framework employed in its creation pushed to a dozen other fantastic ends.

Play It Strange has a great sound as does Presence of Mind. I hadn't heard The Fresh & Only's Presence Of Mind on the radio, I just happened to be going through the top songs for October 13th and found it at 12. I liked it so much I immediately checked out what else the Fresh & Onlys recorded. When I came across this album I thought it was really great.

The Fresh & Onlys remind me of another band that came up with a different sound in the 1960s and 1970s. The band was the Moody Blues. I love the sound of the Fresh & Onlys like I have the Moody Blues. This is a great album and if you like them, especially give the Moody Blues early albums a listen.

On the Threshold of a Dream (Reis), Days of Future Passed (Reis), In Search of the Lost Chord (Reis), Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, Question of Balance (Reis), & Seventh Sojourn (Reis) (Exp).

I love that almost all my favorite groups are from my town- go team! SF isn't dead yet. Since it's practically the birthplace of psychedelia, it's appropriate that it's a nexus of the umpteenth revival of psych & garage. Yet this sound still works, so it's ok to keep beating this horse. It'll never die!

Faster psychedlia with a surf angle- really rocking!

I bought this cd last year after listening to a few snippets and found that it far exceeded my expectations. There really is a strong vibe to the full album and that's how I usually listen to it. The Amazon description above is pretty accurate so I'll just say that this album easily made my top 10 list for 2010 and soon after getting it I bought their 2 previous LPs and have enjoyed them just as much if not more. Top-notch stuff here, these guys deserve to be much 'bigger'!
