4.0 out of 5 stars A Stirring Experience, November 6, 2001

This review is from: Play Kurt Weil (Audio CD)
For its third outing, the jazz trio Tethered Moon focuses on the songs of Kurt Weill, to splendid effect. A photo on the back, a Weill portrait cut into rectangles that don't quite join up, is an accurate glimpse of the musical approach. Nearly everything here is gorgeous and striking, but a "Some Assembly Required" notice wouldn't be out of place.

Pianist Masabumi Kikuchi teams with Gary Peacock (bass) and Paul Motian (drums), veterans who lend character and solidity to any setting. Kikuchi works within the Evans/Bley/Jarrett triangle, and instances of pearl-like tone and incisive phrasing abound. Weill himself can be hard to locate in these artfully prismatic views of his best-known numbers. But if one doesn't mind doing some of the work, a stirring experience awaits.

Exceptional sound quality, with fine detail and bloom. Kikuchi's vocalizing is sometimes distracting.
