Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1 Up-This Caribbean alphabet book is filled with fascinating facts about Carnival. Each page, bordered by bright yellow, is devoted to one letter, and the sentence underneath the scenario, as well as the illustration itself, includes several words beginning with that letter. The artwork fills the pages with color and movement, and a two-page section at the end gives a brief explanation of what's going on in each picture. Another key lists the objects to find on each page. For those totally unfamiliar with West-Indian Carnival traditions, the alphabet format is not conducive to a clearly organized exposition of this special cultural festival. Facts are scattered at random and sometimes hard to relate to one another, and there are many unfamiliar words or usages to master. However, the book does offer myriad facts about this celebration and should be useful for additional multicultural material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, informative introduction to Carnival traditions., April 7, 2000
This review is from: Play Mas'! A Carnival ABC (Hardcover)
Play Mas'! A Carnival ABC is a delightful and informative introduction to the tradition of Carnival. Vibrant pictures by Ras Stone showcase Dirk McLean's evocative language capturing the spirit of this event, held all over the world at different times of the year. Carnival is rooted in the French tradition of the Masquerade (Mas'), but has been transformed by African, East Indian, and Spanish influences showcased is in such events as Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Caribana in Toronto. Play Mas'! A Carnival ABC introduces the rich language, traditions, food, costumes, music, and festival events in an alliterative text. To add to a young reader's enjoyment, there is a hidden letter embedded in each brightly color, boldly designed scene.
