Kindergarten-Grade 4?A book and compact disc that seek to introduce young listeners to classical music. Most of the selections, which last from three to six minutes, are from well-known pieces by Mozart, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Bach. Each excerpt on the disc is accompanied by a full-page watercolor illustration and a poem that ranges from one-to-four pages. The narrative is read aloud, underscored by the music, and then the full musical excerpt is played alone. This format makes for limited interaction; restless page flipping seems inevitable. Rosenberg's text and illustrations try hard to reinforce the mood for music that can create its own mood quite well. And while they may help to tell the story of classic tales of Scheherazade or bring to life the character of Puck in Mendelssohn's "March of the Elves," the ordinary verse and unexceptional art often seems irrelevant to the music introduced.?Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY

Jane Rosenberg's tales, poems, and paintings in Play Me a Story are based on musical compositions that convey a story or mood and are designed to help children appreciate classical music.  As they listen to the works of the great composers, children can imagine the fairies, trolls, animals, country folk, Gypsies, and kings who inhabit this rich and varied world. From the 18th century to the 20th, here is music children can play-act and sing to, shiver and laugh to, march and dance to, music of many moods and styles.  The accompanying CD features the narration of each poem or story, with musical underscoring, followed by an excerpt of an orchestral performance of  the classical work.  The result is a wonderfully involving, beautiful collection that parents can share with their children: a gift of music that can last a lifetime.

More About the Author

Jane Rosenberg was born in New York City where she received a Master's degree in painting from New York University. Her love of ballet, opera, and classical music began in childhood. Her desire to introduce children to the delights of the performing arts provided the inspiration for her books. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Robert Porter, a writer. They have three daughters, all devoted to art and music.
