PLAY = ONE OF THE BEST GIRL BANDS EVER!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Play (Mini Album) (Audio CD)
I can't Play this album enough!! Play are obviously very talent girls, their music is the best!! Here's my review of the album:I'm gonna Make You Love Me (Featuring Chris Trousdale of Dream Street) - A very catchy song!! Faye's vocals are especially great in this song but the whole of Play (and Chris) do a great cover of this song! Us Against The World - This song is incredibly cute!! All about friendship!! Very danceable and popish!! Love this song!! Cinderella - Very catchy song about independance!! The girls do a great version of this song. Hopelessly Devoted - A cover from Grease (originally sung by Olivia Newton-John) Play take this song and give it a pop theme! They do a really good cover of this song!! I LOVE listening to this song! Is It Love? - A slow song where Anna sings a lot. She doesn't sing that much on the album and this song shows how she can do well when she's given this chance to sing!! This song is very good!! I Don't Get Down Like That - Great beat to this song!! Enjoyable to listen to and puts a message across at the same time!! Great song!! Disco Hippie - Very good song to dance to at a party!! Cute and put you in the dance type of mood!! Listen to it and dance away with your friends!! I would recommend this album to Play fans, pop lovers, basically people who like to listen to good music!! The only downside to this album is it only has 7 tracks!! I LOVE this album!! Faye, Anais, Anna and Rosie are talented and awesome and... I could go on forever!! If you haven't already bought it then go do so!! Right now!! You'll love it!!

PLAY is a multi-tlented group and I think that this album and everything they've done in previous years proves it. 'Hopelessly Devoted' was my least favorite song on this album just because, the way they do it makes it sound too.....happy, I guess. Olivia Newton-John's way better on that song. With 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me', I think Faye's voice was even better then it is on other songs, and Chris Trousdale was perfect for the part. I got sick of 'Us Against the World' very very quickly. It's a great song, but it gets annoying after awhile. 'Disco Hippie' is very cool. I like the 'Ooh-Sha-la-la's that they had in that song. 'Is It Love' is a slow song that I'm taking to my school dance next year and I'm going to dance it with my best friend who happens to be a guy. 'Cinderella' is a great song, too, and it was by far my favorite song on the album. I love the way they sing it. It's amazing. 'I Don't Get Down Like That' sounds like it was written about a guy at my school who a lot of my friends went out with and then dumped him really quick. It's a perfect song if you just wanna boogie down some night! :) Faye and Anais are obviously the lead singers(Faye more than Anais), and I don't think Anna sang lead at all! I don't know if she does on any of their songs that aren't on the album but still, she should sing lead on at least one song! All being considered, this is an amazing album and I can't wait for PLAY's next one!

Gotta PLAY it over again,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Play (Mini Album) (Audio CD)
This album may not be as good as "Replay", but at least it has some good song. Here is my rating"1.I'm Gonna Make You Love Me: 3/5 This song is kind of slow, but sometimes when you listen to it too much, it gets boring. 2.Us Against The World: 5/5 This is my favorite song. The music and lyrics are so beautiful. It is about how friends always come first, even if there is a cute boy. I just love the line "Whenever you're near/There is no fear/ It just feels like there's nothing I can do/ You make me feel strong/Cause it's here with you that I belong." 3.Cinderella: 5/5 This is my second favorite song. I like this song better than The Cheetah Girls. Their music is so low and really slow. While Play is really loud and fast. The Cheetah Girls just sound like that they are not even trying. Play is really trying and that is what make it better. It is about how the girls can take care of themselves and that we don't need any boys to save us. I just love the line "I can slave my own dragon/I can dream my own dream/My knight in shining armor is me." and "I'll be there just as strong as he will be there for me." 4.Hopelessly Devoted: 4/5 This song goes from slow to fast. 5.Is It Love: 4/5 This song also goes from slow to fast. 6.I Don't Get Down Like That: 3/5 This song is not really that good. 7.Disco Hippie: 3/5 This song is really a hip hop kind of song.

This CD is the best! Those 4 girls are a great relif from all the sadness and unhappiness in songs today! They have great voices and i met them 3 times, they are sooooo sweet! They are all my idols, even though i'm a year older than them! They really rock and this cd is the best!! Lemme give you my opinions for the songs...1) I'm Gonna Make You Love Me~This song rocks! It features Chris Trousdale, formally from Dream Street. Faye and Chris have a great vibe in their singing, and in the music video Anais and chris have a great chemistry going on! It's a remake from Diana Ross and the supremes with the temptations, and they picked the best band to remake it! 2) Us Against The World~ Personally one of my fave songs...wait wut am i saying...the whole CD is my fave! Well this is their debut album and i love this song, it's a song for best friends saying how they are always gonna look out for eachother when it comes to boys and such, it's a great song to kareoke or to dance to! 3) Cinderella~ Another remake, this was originally a song from the group I-5, but they turned it over to Play and they did a great job with it! Anais sings her sweet side and has a great voice in it! 4) Hopelessly Devoted~ Again, another remake, this is from the movie Grease, but it's a faster and in my opinin better version. Anna sounds so grown up in it. Anyone whos a fan of this song, at first you think the grease version is better, then after listening a few times, you get hooked on this song. 5) Is It Love~ A great love song, all the girls sound great in it. Anna dosent sing much in songs, but she has a pretty big part in this one, and let me say she can handle it. It's a sweet song, and can relate to most girls. 6) I Dont Get Down Like That~ finally a song liek this was made! Let me say that any girl, no matter if you like pop or r&b, yuo will love this song! It's a great lesson that if boys hear this they can learn a little something from this. It's again one of my fave songs on the CD. 7) Disco Hippie~ This isnt really one of my favorites, but it depends on what kind of mood you're in. If you;re having a party with ur friends and want to act crazy and wacky, put this song on. It's a "girls just wanna have fun" type of songs. So i think i made my point that every girl should have this cd in their cd case. And boys should too, in the words of Anais "boys need to listen to this to get to know us girls better" and it's true. So just get it and trust me you'll love the cd and it will never leave ur cd player, i know cuz i bougt it when it came out in June and it hasnt left my walkman since!!

Considering that this is their first CD, I think that Play did a GREAT job.1. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me- this is probably one of the most publicised songs that they've done, but it gets old pretty fast and it really isn't something that you can sing or dance to. (8/10) 2. Us Against the World- definitely my second favorite song on this CD; it's really publicised, too, but you never get tired of dancing or singing along to it. This is really a very happy kind of song :) (10/10) 3. Cinderella- my FAVORITE! I love this song; it's really girl-powerish, and it has great lyrics. My favorite line is where it breaks out and says 'And I'm gonna set me free!' This is a really great, danceable song. (10/10) 4. Hopelessly Devoted- for starters, this is a remake of the song from Grease, and, even though it's completely different except from the lyrics, it's still REALLY good; it's really soulful, and really sweet to listen to. (9/10) 5. Is it Love- this is usually one of the songs that I skip through; it's not that it's bad, it's just that it's one of those songs that skip through to get to the better one. (7/10) 6. I Don't Get Down Like That- I actually like this song; it kind of makes a point and it's okay to listen to. (8/10) 7. Disco Hippie- This one is GREAT, and fun to listen, dance, and sing to. I really love the lyrics, and is pretty funny. (10/10) Overall score: 62 stars out of 70 stars

Girls Are Missing Out By Not Listening to This,
By
This review is from: Play (Mini Album) (Audio CD)
Aren't you sick to death of the dark songs that are floating around. I mean, a little Evanescense is nice sometimes, but you will become incredibly sick of it incredibly soon. It's always, "I'm dying" or "ripped my heart out and left me here to bleed" or something like that. Well, if you are already annoyed by the wave of Goth then LISTEN TO THIS!!! If you want fun, girly pep without any stupid "Boo hoo hoos", then you are in desperate need of this CD. Light romance (no, just dating, so don't worry, parents!), fun party, and cool girl-power songs mix themselves and balance each other out. You do not get sick of this easily, trust me. Anaiis, Faye, Rosie, and Anna are all incredible singers. So quit moping and pop this into your player. You'll be glad you did.

Where is the other half of the CD?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Play (Mini Album) (Audio CD)
Play is a Swedish quartet made up of 4 girls. These girls do have talent, but sometimes the material doesn't quite do it justice. At least one girl in this group has quite a voice, very emotive and full. Another girl has a more subtle, quiet voice, and one has high, child-like voice. The other girl falls somewhere in between soft and subtle and high and child-like. They blend well together, and on the better tracks sound better than a lot of girl groups out there. But my question to Sony/Columbia is: Where are the rest of the tracks? Why only 7? What happened to "Boys Lie" and "To Live And To Die For", which appeared as snippets on the "Us Against The World" single? That would have brought the total to 9 and I'm sure they could have found a track to fill out the CD to make an even 10. Fans won't take being fed tracks piecemeal--this is a sure way to kill a career. And apparently, Sony/Columbia is also doing this with pop band A1. Shame on Sony... Well, on to the tracks we DO have full versions of... The CD opens with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" featuring Chris Trousdale of Dream Street. To be honest, this track would have been better without Trousdale, though he does have a pleasant voice. The song sounds similar to "Us Against The World", with the typical Swedish sound and dramatic chorus. The next track happens to be "Up Against The World", which is probably the best track on the CD. Then comes "Cinderella", which was originally performed by international girlgroup I5, who I presume have now broken up. The track starts off with a nice flute-synthesizer intro that is slightly reminiscent of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever", and has a punchy, empowering chorus to get you singing. "Hopelessly Devoted" is next, and yes, it IS a cover of the song from "Grease". When I first heard it I immediately disliked it. The song was originally a dramatic ballad, and the producer of this remake added a typical pop beat that doesn't quite fit the rhythm of the lyric. It really threw me off and didn't allow me to get into the track--however, after listening to it a couple of times, I found myself singing along. So I consider it a decent cover, but this one could have been done much better, as proven by the next track. "Is It Love" starts off with a strummed guitar intro almost identical to Geri Halliwell's "Love Is The Only Light", co-written by Halliwell, Jorgen Eloffson & Steven Lipson and released almost a year before. "Is It Love" is co-written by Eloffson and Max Martin, and is darn close to a perfect pop song. After the guitar intro, one of the girls sings the first verse beautifully, with a great melody line and background arrangement. Then the drums kick in the all the girls join in on the chorus, with a great vocal hook which will stay in your head for hours. "I Don't Get Down Like That" is a great R&B/Pop number by Rogers & Sturken, the co-writers and producers of many hits. They have worked with Christina Aguilera, among others. The last track on this EP is "Disco Hippie". I could do without the talking over the intro, but the chorus is catchy and fun and perfectly captures the playfulness and feel of late `60s & `70s pop. In closing, this small CD is a tease--a brief glimpse at what could have been quite a pop CD, had Sony/Columbia taken the time to select a few more songs, and given this CD a proper release & promotion. But what IS on here is mostly great, with a few flashes of the extraordinary. This release gets three stars.

Can't Stop PLAYing this Album!,
By MICHAEL W IVERSEN (Minnesota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Play (Mini Album) (Audio CD)
I have been waiting for the longest time for a pop group that has the spunk that no one else has. And suddenly Play appeared out of nowhere and took me by surprise. This kid group featuring Anna (12) Anais (13) Rosie (13)and Faye (13) all have great voices that sound so much older than they really are. This album contains the hits "Cinderella" "I Don't Get Down Like That" and the two smash hits "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" Featuring Chris Trousdale From Dream Street and "Us Against The World" Faye seems to be the lead singer of Play. But with her and Anais' high notes being played in every song, it makes the album even better to show that kids aren't just to be looked passed. The only downside of this album is that there are seven songs! While the CD single of US AGAINST THE WORLD has six songs! But here's a breakdown of the songsI'm Gonna Make You Love Me - Featuring Chris Trousdale From Dream Street -3: 06 - (Grade: A) Faye is the lead singer in the song that was originally Temptation Supreme's But in my opinion, Play sings it way better. Their new fresh pop version makes it a must to listen to. Chris and Play make a good duet together. I think It's a good song for Play to choose to bring back. Just listen and you'll know what I mean. It has really fun, upbeat music and it's really enjoyable. Faye hits some really high notes in this. Us Against The World -3:41 - (Grade: A) This is their first single and one of the best songs on the album. The meaning of the song is really good and the lyrics are great too. The whole thing is really upbeat and danceable. Even better is the singing and the music. They sing it like they're young adults. They sing this so well. I don't think any other band could sing it better. But the only thing that I really don't like about this song is that they repeat the chorus too many times. The chorus is said 8 times while most bands/singers have it 4. It's still a great song but 8 times can get a little too much. Cinderella - 3:36 - Grade: (A+)Play used this song from the band i5. And I Loved this song from i5 and when I heard Play's version, I loved the song even more. The lyrics to this song are really unbelievably great. There are tons of rhymes that are in no way forced. The whole song just plays smoothly. It's really enjoyable. The chorus is really catchy and it gets stuck in your head right away when you hear it. The message in the song is very girl-power but the song itself is fun for everyone to listen to. This would make a fun music video to watch. With Play's creativity, no one would know what they could do with a music video for this song. You won't believe how addicting this song is once you hear it. You'll want it to be forty minutes longer than it is. That's how addicting it is. Hopefully this will be Play's next single. Hopelessly Devoted (Grade: C) - 3:22 - I really like the lyrics to this song. It was very well written. This song really makes you think. Play brought this song back from "Grease" for those who have seen the movie to remember. I really like Play's version though. Again, for the third time so far, Play has made a better version of a brought back song. Faye sings lead in this spunky and PLAYful song. If you liked the Grease Version, you'll love this, and if you didn't like the Grease version, or haven't heard of it yet - You'll still love this version! Is It Love - 3:34 - (Grade: B) Rosie sings lead in this song. This is another one of my favorites. The way it's song is just awesome. You can just tell by listening to this song that they had fun recording it. The music makes the song seem sad, but it's not. I really like the music in this song. This song will probably be one of Play's singles. It's really addicting, once you're done playing it, you want to listen to it again. The chorus would have to be the best part. The lyrics are another bonus to this song, so like "Cinderella" And "Us Against The World" this has a lot of good qualities about it. I Don't Get Down Like That (Grade: B+) - 3:44 - Anais and Faye sing the lead in this one. Another great song by Play. It's a good message going through, and a pretty important one at that. This song is up against "Cinderella" and "Is It Love" to be the next single and the competition is really tight. This is a fun song to listen to. The chorus has really good lyrics that creep into your head. Faye and Anais both hit some really high and great notes at that. This is basically telling a boy to slow down, and quit making all the moves that he's trying because for the girls of Play, they just won't work and won't be tolerated one bit. So it's a good song that represents the girls really well. Disco Hippie - 3:23: (Grade: C-) Anais sings lead in "Disco Hippie" Although I do like this song, this is my least favorite song on the album. But that's only because it's up against six other spectacular songs. I really like the "Ooh Sha La la's" that they sing repeatedly in it. But the lyrics in this song don't really make much sense. Like the beginning when they sing a line about pok'emon knocking at the door. But the music is really fun and this is definitely a good party song but not really a good song to just listen to when you want to listen to music by Play.

Play's self titled debut was suprisingly very good, espescially for their age level. The Sweedish quartet was between the ages of 12 and 14 at the time of the release. Kudos to Play!!! Now, the whole song by song deal:
1) I'm Gonna Make You Love Me---8/10 Love the melody, the harmonies, would have been a 10/10 if it didn't have Chris Trousdale, seeing as he's part of Dream Street, a really cheesy boy band. 2) Us Against The World---9/10 Great to dance to, pretty melody and harmony, great message. 3) Cinderella---10/10 This song was later remade by The Cheetah Girls, but Play's version was so much better! With a killer melody and a ton of talent (as well as a great dancing beat), this is 1 of my favorite songs on the CD. 4) Hopelessy Devoted---8/10 A remake, it was very pretty, but it could have been better. 5) Is It Love---10/10 I LOVE this song. It's great to sing to, espescially if you are a beginner with little or no vocal training. Alothough I've had vocal training, I STILL love to sing this song because the melody is so pretty. 6) I Don't Get Down Like That---10/10 Great melody, killer harmonies, the best song to dance to on the CD. 7) Disco Hippie---3/10 The only song I didn't like. It's cheesy and weird. They still sound good though, that's the only reason they got a 3. Overall (except for the whole Hippie thing), this is a great start for Play!!! |
