Editorial Reviews

Review

“Halliday’s opening installment of her new mystery series will leave you breathless and anxious for the next. . . . you’re in for a high-octane read that’s as fun as it is fast.”—Linda Castillo, New York Times bestselling author of Pray for Silence

Play Nice is captivating from start to finish. Every book Gemma Halliday writes is a keeper!”—Brenda Novak, New York Times bestselling author of Trust Me

"Play Nice starts with a bang and doesn't let up. The action is gripping and the characters are compelling. Anna is quite an interesting dark figure, but it's really Nick who stands out. Halliday has created characters who definitely are strong enough to withstand a long series."--RT Book Reviews

When reading the story, I thought it was very suspenseful, but it is not a romantic suspense (like it is classified and the reason why I purchased it). Where's the romance? I felt a bit duped after reading the story.

This is the first book I've read by this author. All in all, the story wasn't bad, however, it did have a handful of typos despite being published by a well known NY publisher.

I feel like the publisher classified this story as a romantic suspense in order to sell more copies, but it's false advertising. For those of you looking for a romantic suspense, look elsewhere. For those of you looking for a suspenseful story, you might enjoy this story.

This book is a change from her High Heel Mysteries and Hollywood scandals stories (which I thoroughly enjoyed). It was an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading a fast moving book. You never know what's going to happen next. It was so good that I couldn't put it down until I finally reached the end. She left is open to a sequel and I'm looking forward to that ones release. Gemma, I commend you for a job well done!!!

"Play Nice" by Gemma Halliday is an action-packed tale that starts with a bang and never stops moving. Anna Smith is semi-content to live in a small apartment in San Francisco with her Boxer Lenny (named after a famous pugilist). She spends her time working as a groomer at the local animal shelter. One day a hail of bullets abruptly terminates her employment and sends her on the run with Nick Dade. Anya Danielovich was an assassin trained from her early teen years to be an efficient killing machine for the KOS, the Yugoslav Intelligence Agency, before it was disbanded. At the age of 20 she decides to get out before someone else makes the decision for her. Nick has been hired to kill her but his attempt is foiled by someone else shooting at her just as he is ready to pull the trigger himself. His decision to keep Anna alive and in his company until he finds out exactly what is going on is hampered by Anna's resourcefulness in attempting to escape until she discovers an insidious plan that may have national repercussions. The two of them grudgingly work together to try to foil the plot and remain alive long enough to determine whether a bullet will end their relationship before it even begins.

A thrilling tale giving a glimpse of the potential fallout when highly skilled operatives decide to choose a different path for their lives. Intriguing descriptions of an elegant game of cat and mouse juxtaposed with vivid descriptions of San Francisco and other regions of Northern California provide an entertaining and enthralling read. There is a lot of creative license employed but it was fascinating to read about some of the atypical solutions employed to obtain funds, perform minor surgery and circumvent unexpected obstacles. Hopefully this is just the start of an engaging series.

Format: Hardcover
Yugoslavian Kontraobavestajna Sluzba (KOS) counterintelligence service trained young Anya Danielovich to be an assassin. She wanted out, but knew only in death could she be free. In Kosovo, to escape she kills odious General Federov and flees for her life with his bodyguards in pursuit. She reaches her vehicle, which explodes.

In San Francisco, thirtyish single woman Anna Smith lives a quiet life always looking behind her while her memories haunt her. Recently her paranoia intensifies as Anna believes she is under surveillance. Hit man Nick Dade has observed Anya Danielovich with an intense scrutiny as his objective is to kill her. He feels ready to complete the hit after a few weeks of preparation as she walks her dog Lenny in cold wet weather. However, Lenny manages to introduce his owner to her hit man. Still as he finds it hard to reconcile Anna with Anya, he sets up the assassination until a third party begins firing. Nick and Anna flee together as they team up trying to unravel who called for a second hit on his target; as he knows he would have been eliminated too.

The first Anna Smith and Nick Dade Mystery is an exciting San Francisco treat as the pair work together while neither trusts the other. Fast-paced and filled with action except when Lenny provides amusing slapstick moments; fans will enjoy this entertaining thriller even if the motive for one of the hits seems preposterous.

If there was a 6 rating, this book deserves it! Gemma Halliday is one of my favorite writers, barr none. And she has scored another winner in a completely new series--it is unlike anything series she has written before. She has set the stage for hopefully many more books with Nick Dale and Anna Smith (or Anna Jones, or Anya Danielovich--her real name in her former life as a highly trained assassin). She had abandoned that life 15 years earlier in her early 20's (after killing over 20 men as a trained assassin), and has been on the run for those 15 years. Nick is hired by an unknown person to kill Anna, but before he can count to 3 to pull the trigger, another group of assassins starts shooting at her--EXACTLY at the moment he is set to kill her.

I do not want to give many more details about the story per se. Play Nice is an action packed, fast moving
thriller from the first chapter. I read most of it the day I downloaded it. I could not find a place to stop, until my eyes could no longer stay open at 2 am. When I got up the next morning. I finished it first thing!

Gemma has set the groundwork for the new series--while telling the story in a very fast-paced, thrilling way. The story NEVER lags. This departure from her earlier style proves what a fantastically talented story teller she is. Play Nice propells her into the top rung of writers anywhere ( she was only one rung down from the top already)

Of course, her High Heels mysteries series, the Hollywood Headlines mysteries, and numerous novellas and short stories displays her talent for comedic mysteries, if you have not read these wonderful books, get them and read them now. The first 5 books in the High Heels series is sold in a bundle on Amazon for $9.
