NYC hipster glam rock fun, December 28, 2006
Seeing this band live on stage, its no wonder they call themselves the Fabulous Entourage, with their gawdy silver pants, flourescent pink ties and matching wigs and hilarious theatrical on-stage antics. Founded by "new york's hipster playwright" keyboardist-vocalist-trumpetist-songwriter Kyle Jarrow and bassist-vocalist Travis Chamberlain, and featuring two scantily clad deuling female cabaret singers (who occasionally pick up a few instruments), the charmingly unpredictable drummer Perry Silver and a growing list of spontaneous guest musicians, TFE is a wildly entertaining band. Their songs are catchy, uplifting, infectious and danceable. Borrowing elements from Bowie, Lou Reed, Violent Femmes and infusing off-Broadway elements reminiscent of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, their style is instantly at home with the Brooklyn hipster music scene, while being easily accessible music for rock fans elsewhere.
The band tried to capture their live essence on this debut LP, although I don't think the studio environment is where they truly shine. Give them another album or two to display the full range of their capabilities. Nonetheless this is a strong, well produced initial effort. Highlights include the aptly named "Theme Song", the ideal opening of the album (not to mention most of their live shows) which showcases the unique contributions of each of the musicians. "Lying Song", their catchy ballad could easily be a radio hit should this band be discovered by a major label. Finally my personal favorite, and perhaps the crowd favorite, "Perry's Dream", sucks you in and takes you by surprise as you find, halfway through, that you'll have no alternative but to get up and dance.
Pick up the album, look forward to their next one, but if you get the opportunity, go see them live.
