3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Michael Brad Richman HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE on July 1, 2012
Format: Audio CD
I finally understand why Fantasy/OJC remaindered hundreds of their CDs a few years back. They realized that their copyrights to all these valuable recordings would become useless in Europe when they became public domain. That's why you are seeing all these recent Spanish and UK imports of the same material, sometimes for a fraction of the original cost. Of course, some recordings may never see the light of day again, so it makes since to pick up an obscure disc like this one while it's still cheap. "Play Paris" collects two 1954 recordings made by members of Woody Herman's band, one in of course Paris, but the other in San Francisco. These players -- Nat Pierce, Ralph Burns, Dick Collins, Cy Touff and Bill Perkins among them -- had great chemistry, with or without Woody, and this set showcases that. Unfortunately the sound isn't spectacular, with the high end especially distorted throughout the performances. Overall though, this is a fine set for big band fans and Hermanites alike.
