Book Description

December 1, 2002
Teacher and performer Doug Goodkin presents an overview of the dynamic approach to music education known as Orff Schulwerk. In this comprehensive look at the many facets of this timeless practice, the author hopes to re-imagine its import in the lives of children, schools and culture at large in contemporary times. Carl Orff's educational ideas could not have an advocate more well equipped by fortune and disposition. Inspired initially by Avon Gillespie, who embodied playing, singing and dancing, Doug Goodkin also brings to his teaching a first-hand, intensive experience of the indigenous music and dance of many continents and peoples. -Margaret Murray

5.0 out of 5 stars A good surprise!, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Play, Sing & Dance: An Introduction to Orff Schulwerk (Paperback)
At first I was disappointed because I thought I was getting a book filled with lesson ideas, but as I read I became engrossed in the author's ability to transport the reader into a different time and place. I finished the book feeling very inspired, and it has influenced my teaching in a positive way.

This is a good book for ideas on how to engage the students in moving (use of space), introducing a large variety of instruments and even using the body as an instrument by clapping, slapping, stomping, vocalizing, etc. Lots of good ideas and how to do's which is very helpful. A great intro to Orff Schulwerk!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, August 9, 2010
This review is from: Play, Sing & Dance: An Introduction to Orff Schulwerk (Paperback)
Sometimes when I'm feeling frustrated or like I've run out of steam (the middle of the school year!), I like to pick up this book to remind myself exactly what I'm doing here. This is a great book on Orff and definitely recharges my batteries a bit.
