5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering book for parents of late talking children
Play to Talk is an easy to read "how to" book that will empower parents to take fun, effective steps not just to develop their childs speech but to develop real communication and conversation. The method is easy to learn and does not require any long boring speech therapy sessions at home. It simply teaches you how to engage with your child, and how to turn every...

3.0 out of 5 stars Helpful ideas, but very repetitive
There are some very helpful ideas in this book, but I have read many books on speech delays in children (I have twin preschoolers whose language has been delayed), and this one is lacking in content. The same ideas are repeated over and over. Plus, there are many large photographs throughout the book that are fillers instead of presenting new ideas. For a child with...

Play to Talk is an easy to read "how to" book that will empower parents to take fun, effective steps not just to develop their childs speech but to develop real communication and conversation. The method is easy to learn and does not require any long boring speech therapy sessions at home. It simply teaches you how to engage with your child, and how to turn every encounter in normal life into an easy opportunity to improve your child's communication and conversation, right through from totally non-verbal kids to in-depth conversation.
With this method I no longer feel helpless in teaching my daughter to communicate well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, January 19, 2009

This review is from: Play To Talk: A Practical Guide to Help Your Late-Talking Child Join the Conversation (Perfect Paperback)
I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to help my boys (diagnosed with autism) become more social. Wow! Did I learn!
The book details the strategies needed to motivate your child to want to be socially responsive, assess what YOU need to be doing, and develop a plan to help you figure out how to make it work on a day-to-day basis, plus so much more.
In addition, it is written in a way that is easily understandable with no technical jargon. I cannot say enough about how practical and useful this book is. A must have for parent's and professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars GReat and beautiful, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Play To Talk: A Practical Guide to Help Your Late-Talking Child Join the Conversation (Perfect Paperback)
This book is not only good with very good advices; it's beautiful too - just like our kids. This is the book I would have loved and needed to get in my hand when my son was born. The method described works well with my children, both the normally developed girls and my son with Down syndrome and language disorder.

For a child with speech delays, I recommend the Hanen Center's "It Takes Two to Talk" much more. That book has far more practical ideas for application. It is a little expensive though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!, August 17, 2010
This review is from: Play To Talk: A Practical Guide to Help Your Late-Talking Child Join the Conversation (Perfect Paperback)
As a therapist working with children on the autism spectrum, I frequently recommend this book to parents because the easy to follow, highly effective strategies WORK. I use the strategies in this book to train para-professionals, lead team meetings and as a tool for playing with my own young grandson (who is typically developing and an incredible communicator). Children respond so well to these strategies that you won't believe how something so simple can work so well! Really! Children learn through play and this book teaches us how to play effectively in a way that a child can learn and wants to learn and be with us!!!

My son is alittle languaged delayed due to effusions in both his ears. He lost his hearing, thus some language development until he had tubes placed. Now I am trying to get him where he should be. My insurance doesn't pay for speech therapy, and I am not very impressed with the early childhood learning programs. This is when I found this book. It spells out a learning program that a parent can do, track your progress/your childs progress, and does a great job explaining how to get your child to interact with you. It also does a great job giving you very specific dos and don'ts. My son isn't autistic, but I believe one of the authors does have a autistic child, and this seems to be a wonderful book for the purpose of trying to further language/social skills with a special needs child.

I would highly recommend this book, and compared with the other books out there it is very reasonable. I could only find this book on Amazon.
