This book is very informative and easy to read. The illustrations greatly aid the comprehension of Colvert's unique winning "26 Theory." I strongly recommend this book if you are a serious tournament cribbage player (American Cribbage Congress). Colvert has proved this method of play by winning the National Championship 4 times and is currently America's #1 ranked player (lifetime). I began playing in ACC sanctioned tournaments and this has opened up a highly enjoyable hobby and I have met many new friends over the cribbage board. Cribbage is a great sociable game and this book has improved my skills and winning average.

If you're an average player looking to become an expert, then Ieagerly recommend you get a hold of DeLynn Colvert's Play WinningCribbage. It covers basic discarding and pegging technique, as well as more complicated endgame and psychological concepts. It's attractively illustrated, and includes discard tables and other statistics, as well as some "color" material on cribbage history and tournament play. There is also extensive treatment of board strategy, although you might find the discussion in John Chambers' "Cribbage: A New Concept" easier to grasp.
If you're only going to read one book on cribbage, make it this one. The author has been National Champion four times, is the highest rated tournament player in the history of the American Cribbage Congress, and is widely regarded as the world's best over-the-board player. With a track record like that, his advice warrants close attention.
Despite the endorsement, I must knock off a star due to a number of typographical and grammatical errors. It's not a perfect book, but it's the closest thing we have to it in cribbage...

DeLynn Colvert's "Play Winning Cribbage" is the de facto bible of the cribbage-expert world, meaning it's the book universally recommended among those few thousand players who really take the game seriously. Cribbage itself is famously complex, probably the best two-person card game in existence, but bedeviled a bit by its need of a board (for scoring) and the fact that despite learning the basics takes only a few hours, it can take years and years of play to master cribbage's intricacies.

"Play Winning Cribbage" examines many of those intricacies, including such concepts as the Rule of 26, a board-position stratagem which Colvert popularized on his way to becoming the American Cribbage Congress's all-time awards leader (though some of his records are likely to be surpassed in the next few years).

"Play Winning Cribbage" offers insight into several different areas of cribbage play, from selecting and optimizing hand and crib holdings, to proper pegging strategies, to the advanced board-position concepts mentioned above. The book also includes a simulated game, a summary of basic rules and terms, and even some highlight's from the ACC's newsletter, "Cribbage World", taken from Colvert's tenure as that newsletter's editor.

This book is one of those where Amazon's own rating system is inadequate: It gets five stars here because it is clearly the best cribbage book on the market, despite being hard to obtain. (Any seller of the book on this site is likely a private reseller of the book's recent, fourth-edition reprinting.) It really should be a four-and-a-half-star book, because it does have a few problems, but for what it's designed to do, it's the best there is.

The book's handful of drawbacks are relatively minor.

A fellow cribbage player recommended this book. It is written is easy to understand language. The tips on how you should discard, and peg were excellant I've started using his stratigies and am doing better in my local cribbage club. I saw this book advertized in the Cribbage World monthly magazine, and low and behold it purchased through Amazon. I frequently use Amazon and it was easy to purchase using my paswords, etc.

I have virtually all the books written on cribbage. This book is in the top two and may even be number one. Great book for anyone that really wants to understand and improve their game. The casual player will be surprised to find out how much strategy and thought is required to play at a high level. I have read the book once, gone back to sections several times, and will read it cover to cover once again. Very insightful coverage of a game that is more complex than it looks.
