Book Description

This resource examines the natural connection between play and a young child's development and learning. The authors advocate that play should be at the heart of the early childhood curriculum and then demonstrate how to draw both the methods and the content of a successful curriculum from children's spontaneous play. Anecdotes of children's play, theories of play and development, and instructional strategies are interwoven throughout the book. This book takes a unique position, asking not only, "How can play support curriculum?" but also "How can curriculum support play?"

5.0 out of 5 stars For new and experienced teachers alike!, May 11, 2004

(REAL NAME)
I picked this book off the shelf in a college library with a large early childhood education department. I have been teaching for many years but needed some specific information about a play based curriculum. My original intention was just to jot afew notes at the library, and then I found myself checking the book out so I could read more. And now I find myself looking it up on Amazon to purchase it for myself.

This book describes what good early childhood programs should include. Children learn through play, and there are many theorists and researchers ( Dewey, Piaget, Montessori, etc)out there who can validate this, and their information is included in this easy to read book. This book describes how play is important to different domains (cognitive, social, emotional, physical)as well as different curriculum areas (literacy, math, science, social studies). I have found it an excellent reminder, and will use the information to keep parents and student teachers on the right track.
