5.0 out of 5 stars A systematic approach to coaching youth baseball, November 8, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Play ball: The new baseball basics for youth coaches, parents, and kids (Hardcover)
Dr. Coop DeRenne has written a book provides a novice youth baseball coach with a much needed "multi-purpose tool" for coaching the great game of baseball. His book outlines his "holistic" approach to coaching children. His thesis is that in helping a young athlete achieve his maximum potential, a coach should focus on more than just hitting, fielding, or throwing mechanics. He argues that an athlete needs training in five areas. These are: Physical Conditioning (strength and flexibility training), Biomechanical Conditioning (the mechanics of the movement, whether they be hitting, pitching, or fielding), Nutrition Conditioning (teaching a young athlete to eat properly), Mental Conditioning (training the young athlete to deal with such things as fear of failure and pressure situations), and Visual Conditioning (teaching an athlete to focus visually). He argues that if one of these five areas of conditioning is neglected, then the athlete will not be able to achieve maximum performance. I would highly recommend this book to any dad or coach who is serious about helping kids acieve the maximum degree of performance they are genetically capable of.
