This review is from: PlayStation 2 Console Slim PS2 (Video Game)
I've had 5 PS2s over the years. I bought my first one (large one) on the day of its release, and it ended up having the disc read error problem just over a year later. At first Sony wouldn't help because the warranty had expired, so I temporarily fixed the problem by tweaking up my laser voltage. A year after that I read on the internet that they were repairing that problem as my system was developing the same problem again, so I sent mine in. Apart from being without the machine for 2 months while they repaired it, they took good care of it and it worked like new when it came back.
Then I built my car simulator and bought a used PS2 (large one) for use with my driving simulator I built, so that I wouldn't have to move it in and out of the room everytime I played a racing game. Both of these units lasted for years.
Then at my company's Christmas party I won a slim PS2. So I went and plugged it in and within a couple of weeks, the controller port burnt out in it. No big deal. I took it back to exchange it and the new one was fine. I also ended up replacing my other large one with the slim model.
Any new technology is subject to having some problems, just look at DLP tvs that have to have the crystal changed every year at about $500 a pop. At least Sony is willing to stand behind their product.
Be informed though, the slim model will never have a hard drive, which isn't a big deal, because only one game that I know of actually requires it. But it does have the built-in network card, which is a plus. It seems to me that the load times are a little longer also on the Slim one, but that could be my imagination, and if so, it's not by a lot. The smaller size does make it very convenient to travel with.
All in all the PS2 is an awesome system with the best racing games and role-playing games of any system so far hands down. It also has a strong representation in other genre's, but if you just want a system so you can play first person shooters like Halo, then you probably want an X-box.

Dies after aboout 8 months to a year on average., July 1, 2006

While i do like the PS 2 line up of games the system itself i have lost all confidence in.
My first two PS 2's (the old bigger version) died from the disc read error problem.
I thought maybe in the new design this problem was addressed since the laser lens is more easily accesible and you'd think that would make it easy to clean it and stuff.
Well the new slim i bought a year ago just stopped reading discs to and i tried to clean the laser lens and it has no effect whatsoever.
I have bought 3 playstation 2's in the last 4 years.
If i buy another one it will be my 4th in 4 years and will bring up my total spent on new PS 2's to about 800 dollars.
More then it costs to buy the upcoming PS 3 on a much lesser system.
Conveniently they die on me after the warranty is gone.
I have 200 games that are all dust collectors now cause i refuse to buy another PS 2 again.
They have no durability whatsoever and the life of the systems i have owned seems to be just over a year on each.
Thats not acceptable.
I take good care of my systems and it doesn't matter.
With time the PS 2's just stop reading discs for whatever reason.
Then they want you to buy another one or ship it somewhere to be fixed (and charge you for it of course).
If it was an isolated thing with one faulty system i would have no problem with it.
But when all three systems i buy die from the same exact problem thats not acceptable.
Theres an obvious flaw in the building of this system and Sony simply refuses to address it and fix the problem where it starts in manufacturing.
Because people keep flocking to the store to but them Sony won't bother to fix it cause as long as they see profits that translates to them as being no problem with the system.
My advice is to avoid Sony console systems until they one day show they can create one with some durability.
Especially with the new PS 3,if that one ends up having the same flaw as this system its going to cost alot more to keep replacing.
For the time being Sony systems are a bad investment.
They just don't have long lasting durability.
My original Nintendo lasted longer then all 3 of my PS 2's combined which is pretty sad considering that the first nintendo had a bad reputation for durability.

We own two PS2 units. One traveled cross country in the back seat of the car in 2002 (over 8000 miles!), and they both work great. They have always been reliable, and there is a great variety of games available to play on them. We have two -- one for me, and one for my son.
