Definitely worth it,

I've had 5 PS2s over the years. I bought my first one (large one) on the day of its release, and it ended up having the disc read error problem just over a year later. At first Sony wouldn't help because the warranty had expired, so I temporarily fixed the problem by tweaking up my laser voltage. A year after that I read on the internet that they were repairing that problem as my system was developing the same problem again, so I sent mine in. Apart from being without the machine for 2 months while they repaired it, they took good care of it and it worked like new when it came back.
Then I built my car simulator and bought a used PS2 (large one) for use with my driving simulator I built, so that I wouldn't have to move it in and out of the room everytime I played a racing game. Both of these units lasted for years. Then at my company's Christmas party I won a slim PS2. So I went and plugged it in and within a couple of weeks, the controller port burnt out in it. No big deal. I took it back to exchange it and the new one was fine. I also ended up replacing my other large one with the slim model. Any new technology is subject to having some problems, just look at DLP tvs that have to have the crystal changed every year at about $500 a pop. At least Sony is willing to stand behind their product. Be informed though, the slim model will never have a hard drive, which isn't a big deal, because only one game that I know of actually requires it. But it does have the built-in network card, which is a plus. It seems to me that the load times are a little longer also on the Slim one, but that could be my imagination, and if so, it's not by a lot. The smaller size does make it very convenient to travel with. All in all the PS2 is an awesome system with the best racing games and role-playing games of any system so far hands down. It also has a strong representation in other genre's, but if you just want a system so you can play first person shooters like Halo, then you probably want an X-box.

While i do like the PS 2 line up of games the system itself i have lost all confidence in.
My first two PS 2's (the old bigger version) died from the disc read error problem. I thought maybe in the new design this problem was addressed since the laser lens is more easily accesible and you'd think that would make it easy to clean it and stuff. Well the new slim i bought a year ago just stopped reading discs to and i tried to clean the laser lens and it has no effect whatsoever. I have bought 3 playstation 2's in the last 4 years. If i buy another one it will be my 4th in 4 years and will bring up my total spent on new PS 2's to about 800 dollars. More then it costs to buy the upcoming PS 3 on a much lesser system. Conveniently they die on me after the warranty is gone. I have 200 games that are all dust collectors now cause i refuse to buy another PS 2 again. They have no durability whatsoever and the life of the systems i have owned seems to be just over a year on each. Thats not acceptable. I take good care of my systems and it doesn't matter. With time the PS 2's just stop reading discs for whatever reason. Then they want you to buy another one or ship it somewhere to be fixed (and charge you for it of course). If it was an isolated thing with one faulty system i would have no problem with it. But when all three systems i buy die from the same exact problem thats not acceptable. Theres an obvious flaw in the building of this system and Sony simply refuses to address it and fix the problem where it starts in manufacturing. Because people keep flocking to the store to but them Sony won't bother to fix it cause as long as they see profits that translates to them as being no problem with the system. My advice is to avoid Sony console systems until they one day show they can create one with some durability. Especially with the new PS 3,if that one ends up having the same flaw as this system its going to cost alot more to keep replacing. For the time being Sony systems are a bad investment. They just don't have long lasting durability. My original Nintendo lasted longer then all 3 of my PS 2's combined which is pretty sad considering that the first nintendo had a bad reputation for durability.

We own two PS2 units. One traveled cross country in the back seat of the car in 2002 (over 8000 miles!), and they both work great. They have always been reliable, and there is a great variety of games available to play on them. We have two -- one for me, and one for my son.

This slim version is my second PS2, I bought the original PS2 on release and sold 2 years later, I have decided not play anymore, then I couldn't stay away for long then got the slim version for almost 2 years now, I have never encounter a problem with none of those versions, I still have a whole bunch of games from the original playstation one, all of then play great. I am here to buy another one, now for my nephew.

My personal experience with this console,

Like a lot of other peope have done, I went out and bought this console because my initial Playstation 2 would not read most of the disks. I was hoping this new system would last as opposed to it's counterpart.
It has not disappointed me thus far. It has been very stable, and I have had this version of the console for quite some time now. Not once have I gotten a disk read error with this console. Everything still works like the way it did when I first bought it. As far as the games go, well I have always liked the PS2 better than the XBOX, the games are better in my opinion. I traded in my XBOX for Final Fantasy X2 as a matter of fact. The problem was, when I got FFX2, it was when my first PS2 was starting to mess up, so I had to get this version. Like I said previously, it works perfectly for me still.

The best 128 bit system ever created,

Sony's 128 bit money making machine got a little slimmer last year with this this amazingly small new design, but that's not the only reason to pick up a PS2 if you don't already own one or can't wait for the PS3. Simply put, the PS2 is the best 128 bit system ever created, featuring a gigantic library of games, many of which set the standard for gaming today and in the future. Where else can you play the incredibly fun Guitar Hero? Or find unique games like Shadow of the Colossus and Ico? Or the platforming excellence of the Jak and Daxter series and Ratchet & Clank series? There's a plethora of RPG's for the RPG nuts, and the list of sports and racing games are second to none. The original XBox has always topped the PS2 in terms of graphics and online capabilities, and the first party support isn't as quality laden as Nintendo's on the Gamecube, but the PS2 is still the simplest console to operate and trouble shoot, and even though it's life span is dwindling down now, it's still the best system available right now (yes, it even tops the XBox 360, for now that is) and there's still some great games to come for the system, particularly the highly anticipated sequels to God of War and Guitar Hero, as well as exclusive titles like Okami and God's Hand. Below is a list of essential games that should be in every PS2 owner's library:
Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas God of War Tekken 5 Shadow of the Colossus Resident Evil 4 Dragon Quest VIII Guitar Hero ESPN NHL 2K5 Jak 2 Twisted Metal: Black Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Ico Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

The slim Ps2 has some madjor isuse like people have said the first versions of the slim was model 12 and has serious laser isuses it burns out after about 6 months of use, the version 13 fixed the laser problems but will not read black ps1 disks. In the end the slim ps2 is not worth it. The best model ps2 availbe is the version 9 fat ps2.

I had an xbox and it was powerful, with great graphics and the hard drive was awsome. But I traded it in for a PS2 for a simple reason. There were about 5 good games for the xbox and about 50 I wanted for PS2. People will complain about the graphics on PS2 but just look at God of War and you'll realize the system has plenty of power. It's has many more games than any other system and just for me, it felt great to hold the dual shock control again. I loved the original PS and it just felt like coming home to trade the xbox for that familiar feeling.

The PS2 is a great system. I'm personally a PC gamer, but my mom bought my wife and I the PS2 for Dance Dance Revolution. Since then we've bought several other games, and we enjoy them all. Fast shipping through Amazon, no problem there.

Batter option then allot of gaming systems out there, Sleek; lots of good games; DVD movie playback however nice to have a built-in hard drive for faster access and less load on laser which tend to die fast due to continuous use; just matter of time; this one has only two controller ports. Memory card is relative expensive ($24 for a 8 mb card) and can't play most of the games without it so add this $24 into the price.
The good thing is that PS2 Games are cheap and easily available then XBOX, fun for all age kids. just make sure that you have to buy another one after some time, laser WILL die soon! Wait for PS3 if you can. |
