When you see the "Vertical Stand" and "Horizontal Stand" listed next to each other, you may think that they're similar products. Don't believe it.

If you stand your PS2 unit vertically, a hard jolt _could_ cause the unit to fall over, which _could_ cause damage to a disc in the drive. The vertical stand will prevent this from happening. This is A Good Thing.

If you stand your PS2 unit horizontally, it will not fall over unless you pick it up and drop-kick it. (And if you do that, the stand won't do anything but injure your foot, and you'll probably void the PS2's warrantee.) A stand is _not_ necessary for a PS2 in the horizontal configuration. The Sony PS2 horizontal stand will _not_ improve your PS2's stability. It will _not_ lift your PS2 by more than an eighth of an inch or so. It will _not_ make it easier to access any of the PS2's controller ports. It will _not_ significantly improve the PS2's cooling. In short, the PS2 horizontal stand has no practical use whatsoever.

So is it a completely pointless product? Not quite. If you look at the picture, you'll notice a raised blue strip at the front of the stand. When you install the horizontal stand, this raised blue strip covers the bottom half-inch or so of the PS2 (at least the parts of it not used by the ports). In my opinion, this _does_ make the PS2 look marginally better (though it looks perfectly reasonable on its own).

So if you're looking to make a minor fashion statement for your PS2, then by all means, buy the horizontal stand. Just don't expect it to be anything more than that.

Sony did not just make this horizontal stand for aesthetic purposes. And like many people stated, it lends no physical support whatsoever to the console. But what it does do is save you the heartache and pain I went through. The PS2 is not supposed to be placed directly on carpet, in entertainment centers and should be raised somewhat when placed in bookshelves. Static electricity can be a problem, as it was with me because I did not have a stand. I had to get my console repaired/replaced because of some kind of a short due to the fact the console was not sufficiently isolated from the ground. Further, if the circulation around your PS2 is not really good, you need to raise it up off the surface to allow air to pass over, under and past it. This allows it to cool better and may help prevent accumulation of dust. Both of which can destroy the unit.

The only problem I have with this thing is that if a stand is essential for the PS2 to work (as they say in the users manual) why not put it in the box with the console, or build the unit so it is raised higher off the ground and better insulated? I think I know the an$wer....

I know that everyone believe that a horizontal stand is useless...but if you have an extra 10 bucks then go for it. Recently I purchased the horizontal stand in addition to the vertical stand. While I was using the vertical stand, my PS2 scratched my Tekken Tag and now it is defective and cannot be played. I reported the problem to Namco and they informed me that when the PS2 is placed vertically, it has a chance to scratch the game and that the problem should be reported to Sony. So anyway, now I only put my PS2 horizontally just in case...so I don't have to shell out another 50 bucks...When you put the PS2 horizontally with the stand, it looks pretty dope too. Give it a try!

5.0 out of 5 stars Horizontal Stand, October 2, 2002

What more can I say, Its self-explanatory. Hence the name!!! It's main purpose is to look cool. Sure you can place your PS2 in its vertical position, and yes that would save you alot of room, but in the long run your PS2 will start to scratch your cds. No matter how well you take care of it, even if you treat it like it was part of your family, it would still give you the same result. Trust me, I've been through two PS2 already. The first model which in my opinion, sony rushed it out into the market so that they can make some cha-ching you know. That system died on me for no apparent reason. I'm guessing because of its weak laser assemble. I've waited in a line for hours and hours, spend a couple of bones on it and within a few months the system just chokes. My second system came upon me as a gift, including the Vertical Stand. At first glance, People said: "Sh#$ this looks flood plucking tight" Being me, I took their word for it and I placed the system in it's up right position. No sooner did I noticed that the system starts spitting out my cds with circular scratches on each and everyone of them. A long story short, that system died too, as I was very piss off at it plus it stoping dvds too. This is my third and final system, and I plan to keep it that way for a long time as I am now placing the system with a horizontal stand. I've had it for about two months now and it works great. Need I say more. So if you plan to position your system to make it look cool and not have to worry about scratches then look no further then purchasing the horizontal stand.
Note: Positioning the system in it's vertical stand can cause it to scratch, but this was my experience with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Um, why would you need this?, November 5, 2000
This review is from: PlayStation 2 Horizontal Game Console Stand (Video Game)
Really? I don't understand why some one would buy this. The PS2 isn't going to get any more stable with the help of it (and is pretty stable without it) and all it does is put a blue plastic bar in front of the ps2. It's a waste of money unless you want a blue plastic bar in front of your ps2 (I don't see the point but if you think it'll make your ps2 look better I guess that could be worth buying). But if you are buying it cause you think it will be functional for anything... um... sorry, there's nothign it really does (The vertical stand at least offers a little more stability).

I have bought this from a local retailer. I thought that it would somehow elevate my PS2, so that it might not suck in any extra dirt. Well it sits flattly under the PS2, and is nothing more than cosmetic. And it barely even does that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need something to put your Playstation on? This is for you!, July 6, 2002
This review is from: PlayStation 2 Horizontal Game Console Stand (Video Game)
The stand effectively raises your PS2 approximately half an inch off the ground, thus increasing it's self-esteem, as it reigns above the other lowly, ground-dwelling consoles. Be careful they do not get too jealous!
For added fun, try placing your PS2 underneath the stand, or next to it. Purhase two, for additional standitude. It will also assist you in stacking your playstation 2s, assuming you have more than one.
Don't buy any of those cheap third party horizontal stands, as they will most likely break under stress, injuring dozens.
While not as exciting, it is a must buy for those too unadventurous get a vertical stand, or the coveted diagonal stand.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very cool looking, but a waste of money..., December 18, 2000

According to Sony, when the PlayStation 2 was first designed, it included the blue bar that comes with the horizontal stand. For whatever reason, they decided to remove this feature. Maybe to get to get us to dish out another 10 bucks, but most likely because while it looks cool in the horizontal position, the blue bar would look pretty bad when the PS2 is used in the vertical position. Asides from that, the horizontal stand is completely useless. It does not add any extra stability to the unit, and when you pick up the PS2 to move it you must move the stand too, they do not become attached. If I were you, (and I did the same thing), I would put the 10 bucks towards a vertical stand, which is both cool looking and useful.

I believe it was P.T. Barnum who said "There's a sucker born every minute." If Barnum knew anything about Sony's vertical and horizontal stands for the PS2, he would have added, "And that sucker shells out 10-15 bucks for useless plastic.

I'm sure Sony had some reasoning (other than money) to create and market this thing. The carpeting thing as many people mentioned is one, but I don't see why anyone would do that in the first place. I think it even says in the PS2 instructions not to place it on carpet. And I know that it's not for stability (though the title of my review may be poking fun at it), but this thing is all around useless.

Look at the features: Air circulation? Raises the gaming unit? STABILIZES?!?! Sleek design and looks cool. Whatever. Wanna know how to get around this? Circulation - don't put your PS2 on carpet, under water, buried in dirt, or anywhere near your little brother's Pokemon toys. Raises the gaming unit - try putting it up on blocks as one reviewer suggested, or if you like get a car jack and just raise the thing and lower it to your preference. Stabilizes - I could go into a fifteen paragraph tangent about that one but I wont. You all know what I would say. Sleek design and looks cool - if you're worried about your PS2's looks, you probably have more issues than a horizontal stand can fix. And if you're that concerned, the PS2 will always look "cooler" than that purple toaster oven-shaped mini-disk playing Game Cube. No offense to Nintendo.

I reviewed the vertical stand too, and I basically said the same thing. I don't own either, and I have no plans to buy them. I think it's just a way for Sony to rip people off. No other game system needs something like this, and I'm sure the next generation Playstation wont need it either.

Uh-oh, gotta go. I put my PS2 in the horizontal position and it's starting to teeter. AGH! It's falling right toward my Metal Gear Solid 2 game!!
