Let's get the downside out of the way first: way too much pontificating, INCLUDING VISUALS OF PONTIFICATORS (Hef, photographers & other talking heads)--hopelessly, inextricably intermingled with countless shots of gorgeous, naked/nearly bare women, making it essentially impossible to satisfactorily fast-forward through the chaff without missing some wheat. Done purposely because they knew if they separated the bites from the babes they would otherwise likely have been ignored? We'll never know. This choice of format goes a long way toward accounting for the missing fifth star, & takes place on disc one.

To be fair, the content of these irritating interruptions would no doubt be of interest to those who are curious about PB's roots & Hef's journey.

On both discs, some of the footage has that infamous VHF-to-DVD-transfer graininess.

The upside includes: (on disc one) HUNDREDS of scantily- or unclad beauties, over a period of fifty years of course--most of them, er, embodying "the girl you wished lived next door;" though a substantial portion of these, especially from the early days, are stills from the magazine, I still find it exciting & fun to look back with an erotically nostalgic eye.

Then (on disc two) we see photo shoots--twenty altogether, & mostly videos rather than stills--of Playmates of the Years from the '80s & '90s. These vignettes often lapse HEAVILY into the artsy--keep that aforementioned FF button at the ready--but of course the models are virtually all knockouts, which helps.

This being PB, of course we don't expect breathtaking, revealing rear views or pink, but there's still a good amount of pleasurable beauty. And for those with whom this is an issue, there's the least silicone anyone will find in all soft porn here (on both discs), from my experience.

Overall, again in all fairness, I give 'em credit--I feel they pulled out a lot of stops on this one.
