Editorial Reviews

Played In Full: The 90s brings together some of the best full length 12" mixes and remixes of the last decade. With 3 distinctive themed CDs, Played In Full is the definitive 12" collection for the Trainspotting generation.

Complimented by vibrant music movements and the proliferation the Compact Disc, the ‘90s was a great era of the monster-selling hit single. The decade also gave birth to the clubbing lifestyle and the rise of the super club phenomenon – and Played In Full rediscovers the collection of some of the best tracks of the time in all their full length club mix glory.

Distinctively indie, CD1 features hits like Stone Roses’ "Fools Gold" remixed by Tall Paul, Happy Mondays’ "Step On" Stuff It In mix, Motiv 8’s remix of Pulp’s hit "Common People," and Underworld’s "Born Slippy," the soundtrack of the Trainspotting generation.

CD2 features pop dance hits including Now Voyager Mix of The Source Featuring Candi Staton (as featured on the final episode of Sex and the City), and classics such as "Devotion" by Nomad, the Brothers in Rhythm mix of Kylie Minogue’s "Confide in Me," and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince "Summertime."

Showcasing the best in the rave scene, CD3 includes all time classics such as Baby D "Let Me Be Your Fantasy," The Prodigy "Out Of Space," Hardfloor remix of Mory Kante’s "Ye Ke Ye Ke" and the incredibly SL2 "On A Ragga Tip."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome. The 90s finally getting some CD recognition for rare 12" singles, July 22, 2006
This review is from: Played in Full: 90's - Definitive 12" Coll (Audio CD)
Let's hope this trend continues--even though there are still so many 80s 12" versions that haven't even made it to CD yet! There are very few errors here--mostly all the right versions. I've added some notes below with the track listing to clarify some mixes. Some complaints, though. For one, the use of The Farm's "All Together Now" instead of "Groovy Train", which was not only the better song, but which also never appeared on CD in its 12" format. There's the 12" Choice mix of Ce Ce Peniston, when it is the other version on the vinyl 12" that is so rare and impossible to get on CD and should have been on here instead. And also important to note--Rockafeller Skank fades about 30 seconds early, because, well, the original ending is really repetitive and useless, but it still makes this NOT the full length mix.... Another problem occurs with "Papua New Guinea." The first 10 seconds of the intro is missing!

It's very cool to see that some thought went into the compilation, for each of the three discs is labeled with a different style of music--although, to be honest, disc 1, the "indie" disc, crosses well over into rave, since many of these mixes are actually rave/club mixes, even if the artists weren't--and extra cool is the fact that the track by Leftfield features Johnny Rotten on vocals. And disc 3, "Rave", never really dares to go into any hardcore techno, which was simply huge in the 92. These mixes are all very tame. But there are so many great techno collections out there it's not really a necessity.

Overall, this collection is brilliant, bringing back tons of memories, filling in gaps in your 90s collection, and focusing specifically on the earlier 90s, when many singles were still only being released on 12" vinyl before CD singles finally kicked in.

CD1: INDIE

1. Step On (5:49) (this is on the original CD single, but the lead version was called "Step On 91". It was a shorter version, but it's the one that begins with the acapella vocals of the background girls singing "he's gonna step on you again!" This version begins with the piano riff)
2. I'm Free (8:04) (WOW. This is the "long version"--the RIGHT version that was not included on the domestic CD single, which had an inferior remix)
3. all together now (5:41) (this is the version simply known as the 12" mix on the CD single, which has loads of remixes)
4. Come Home (8:26)
5. brimful of asha (7:35)
6. rockafeller skank (6:21) (the original runs 6:55 with a really repetitive vocal echo that has been faded early here)
7. fools gold (6:52) (A deep house mix. I've never heard this one before. A cool change from the original long LP version)
8. Open Up (8:50) (Guest vocalist John (rotten) Lydon!)
9. Move Any Mountain (5:41) (the best mix of this song out there, and it was originally only on the vinyl 12" single)
10. Common People (7:51)
11. Born Slippery (8:10)

CD2: POP

1. dub be good to me (5:20) (this mix is not on my domestic CD single--but it sounds like an EXTENDED version of the original LP mix)
2. I wanna give you devotion (6:45)
3. gypsy woman (7:31) (this mix, the best mix of all, is VERY hard to find on CD in its full length! So rejoice!)
4. Where Love Lives (6:53)
5. Finally (7:04) (BUMMER. This mix is EVERYWHERE. The better mix is the version on the flipside of the original 12" vinyl single, and it's nowhere to be found on CD!)
6. show me love (7:38)
7. dreamer (5:39)
8. rhythm is a mystery (5:42)
9. confide in me (10:26)
10. you got the love (6:06)
11. summertime (5:41) (Not complaining, but such an out of place addition to this collection)

CD3: RAVE

1. On a Ragga Tip (5:03)
2. Out of Space (5:00)
3. Playing with Knives (6:47)
4. move your body (7:13)
5. let me be your fantasy (7:50)
6. is there anybody out there (7:13)
7. passion (7:45)
8. the real thing (7:18)
9. yeke yeke (6:25)
10. age of love (6:38)
11. papua New Guinea (4:50)(missing the first 10 seconds of the intro)
12. Children (7:04)
