It's About Time!,
By Rockiniceman (Sauk Rapids, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Player / Danger Zone (Audio CD)
One of the greatest and most overlooked bands of the late 70's/early 80's! Player is pure west-coast pop/rock! Much in the vein of Hall and Oates, but with a little more of a rock edge! Peter Beckett has a fantastic vocal range which is pure listenig pleasure. Baby come back is a classic rock #1 billboard charting music staple! But, for the real fan's like myself it's the obsure album tracks that are my favorite such as:Love In The Danger Zone,Prisoner Of Your Love,Movin'Up,and Cancellation to name a few.If you love fantastic up beat pure 80's rock you'll want this fantastic c.d. in your collection! It's my favorite c.d. and I have alot of them!

One Way records has done it again! A must buy/have. This is a fun CD. The manner in which the music was written and played instrumentally will bring smiles to your face. This CD touts the original songs in their original 1977 & 1978 sequence which is always good!Additionally this CD has two album/compilations "Player" and "Danger Zone". If you are looking for memories as to a very different yet marvelous time in music this is it. From the hit, "Baby Come Back" to "Melanie"--the tunes are all gloriously here. (Note: Sadly, Player must have forseen their own demise with the great tunes "Cancellation" and "Tryin' to Write A Hit Song"). The price is outstanding for the two-fer offering here. Grab it up before it goes out-of-print.

Even though I own several, Various Artists, compilations: I don't care much for them and this band right here is another prime example why. Their well known late 70s chart smash, Baby Come Back, is on one of my ,Various Artists, Disc's and that's it. Nothing else by this Band can be found on any of my ,Various Artists, Disc's and, Player, offered so much more to it's fans than just that one song and this CD proves it.There are about six songs here that I like better than, Baby Come Back. This Band was so talented and so underrated and as of the date of this Review; there wasn't even a Spotlight Review for this CD. Besides, Baby Come Back, I did remember three other Songs here on my first listen but my biggest surprise were tunes I had never heard before. This (Two LP's On One CD) is solid from start to finish.....Outstanding! I was going to purchase their, Best Of Player, CD here at Amazon and right at the last second I decided to purchase this one and I am glad I did because only a few of these songs are on the, Best Of, CD. People have different tastes in music but to me this is great.Final Note: If you are concerned about the sound quality on this CD: don't be; because it is great too.

these 2 albums really bring me back to the late 70's. both great albums, especially Danger Zone. i don't know why is was ignored by radio. the only problem was that Prisoner Of Your Love & Let Me Down Easy were butchered to fit these 2 albums onto one disk. the orginal versions were exceptional! maybe one day the original 2 albums will be remastered and released again- all songs intact.

A Treasure Rediscovered,

PLAYER / DANGER ZONE is the CD release of the first two albums by Player. Anyone around in the late 70s found it hard to get away from the hit single "Baby Come Back," but this compilation offers much more. The members' musicianship is what made these albums great. The group's music is flavored with R&B, rock and a little bit of country. For the fan who had both albums this is well worth buying, the remastering is FANTASTIC! The sound is crisp and clean revealing the complexity of the songs. Fans do not hesitate to revisit this breath of fresh air released in those disco choked days. For those not around or unaware of the breadth of this band, this CD will be a treat. The PLAYER half of this CD is the band's debut. Of the ten tracks, the two principal songwriters in the group, J.C. Crowley and Peter Beckett, wrote or co-wrote five, trading or sharing lead vocals on all but one track (sung by future soap star Ronn Moss.) The driving beat provided by the excellent drumming of John Friesen and the bass stylings of Ronn Moss are well evidenced in such songs as "Come On Out", "Goodbye (That's All I Ever Heard)" and "Love Is Where You Find It." There are examples of that soft 'California' style rock here in the form of "Melanie," "Every Which Way," "This Time I'm in it for Love" and "Movin' Up." The band ably rocks all out in "Cancellation." The one song that doesn't seem to fit here is the country infused "Tryin' to Write a Hit Song;" a great tune but not well matched to the rest of the album. The success of the Beckett/Crowley collaboration "Baby Come Back" led to much more creative control on their sophomore release DANGER ZONE. DANGER ZONE, the second half of this CD, shows the band getting its rocks off! There are still those R&B rhythms; as a matter of fact the bass and drum beat are more prominent. This time all songs are penned by Beckett/Crowley and they trade off on lead vocals once again. "Love in the Danger Zone," "I Just Want to be With You," "Prisoner of Your Love" and "Wait Until Tomorrow" feature the heavier vibe and they sound pretty damn good! "Silver Lining," "Forever" and "Join in the Dance" are the rockers here, the first featuring a sizzling vocal performance by Beckett. "I've Been Thinkin'" and "Let Me Down Easy" are the ballads that end what were the 'sides' of the LP. I don't believe that this album was as commercially successful as their debut but it definitely shows the growth and maturation of the group's music. Player / Danger Zone is a must for any fan who wore out the original vinyl versions as well as the uninitiated who only know "Baby Come Back."

PLAYER- AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.,

I OWN 10 CDS OF PLAYER/PETER BECKETT. I NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO ANY OF THEM. I DON'T KNOW OF ANY OTHER BAND/ARTIST THAT CREATES PERFECTION WITH THEIR INSTRUMENTS, WRITING, AND VOICES COMBINED. THE WORDS GO STRAIGHT TO THE HEART AND SOUL. PETER'S RANGE IS LIKE NONE I'VE EVER HEARD. HE PULLS YOU IN WITH HIS BLUE EYED SOUL HIGH NOTES, AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT HE'S MAKING LOVE TO YOU WITH HIS LOW, SOFT, SEXY WHISPERS.AND FOR THE GUYS, THERE'S AWESOME GUITAR RIFFS! IF YOU LOVE DANGER ZONE. THEN DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY EVERYTHING WITH THE BECKETT/PLAYER NAME ON IT. LIKE TAYA SAID, THEY ARE SO UNDER-RATED. THE NEW BANDS TODAY SHOULD LISTEN AND LEARN.
