Player is very slow - slow to power on, slow to start a disc, slow to do anything. Can this be remedied?

As far as powering on, there is a setting that will keep the machine in a "sleep" type mode so that it will power on more quickly. You will find this toggle in settings, then system settings, then quick start mode. As far as disc loading, blu-ray discs take a bit because they actually load software to play. This machine is about average in my experience.

Take it back. Get a new one. Mine is by far the quickest Blu-Ray player I've tried. Yours has to be faulty. That happens!
