The Crazy and Wild World of Stripping!,
By Marcus (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Players Club (DVD)
This movie sounded stupid when I first heard about it. Who could make a 2 hour movie based on stripping at a club and have it make sense? Obviously, Ice Cube could. This movie stars LisaRaye in her film debut as Diana, who is known to the stripping world as Diamond, a hardworking college student who needs a better way to pay to get herself through school. While working at a shoe store, she meets Trixie (Adele Givens) and Ronnie (Chrystale Wilson). They convince her into quitting her low-paying job and working at The Player's Club, a run down joint owned by a lowlife loser named Dollar Bill (Bernie Mac). When Diana's cousin Ebony (Monica Calhoun) comes into town, she tells Diana that she wants to work at the player's club. Ebony gets caught up in this world and is drowning in the lows of "using what you've got to get what you want". This movie is a thrill ride and the fight scene towards the end is the best part of the movie. Featured in the movie are Jamix Foxx, A.J. Johnson, and John Amos. The plot is perfect and the script is well written. This movie has to be one of my favorite.

Entertaining drama,

I don't know why, but I've always liked this film. Yes it's crass and everything that guy said, but it still doesn't fail to entertain. I'm white, sorry.. and bisexual (not sorry for that though hehe) but this is still one of my favorite films, mainly for the beautiful women, good acting, and the different characters. Diamond is beautiful and sexy, but tough and classy, and also smart about what she decides to do and not do. Ronnie is a complicated character because sometimes she is helpful and you almost want to like her, but other times she is lying, coniving, and betrays people who trust her. I think the reason why ice cube "kept it real" is mainly because he is a rapper and because of his image. He played kind of a thug up to no good. What did you think he would play a cop or something? I also really enjoyed the police spanking scene, that was hysterically funny. Another one of my favorite scenes, is when diamond first dances, and the other is when ronnie stands up after ebony gets off her lap and she has on a red cowgirl hat and thong, and as she walks away you see how nice her body is, and how nice her a** is, as well as how tall she is. And i loved her blond hairdo's. Too bad she was one of the crazy strippers that ends up getting her a** whoooped by diamond in the end. Another great scene. Which is why i never understood the term catfight because girls can be great fighters, i've seen some pretty brutal and vicious fights involving girls where fists are involved and broken noses, no nail scratching like most guys think. I once saw a fight between two new york girls outside a club, and the girl's head was being slammed into the cement over and over like a ragdoll. I didnt think a head could handle that much trama. The term catfight, is merely a sexist and stereotypical made up word by men. But anyways, this movie is entertaining, and i never get tired of it. This may be a guy movie mostly, but i'm a woman, and i like it!

Like someone else said... Cult Classic!,
By
This review is from: The Players Club (DVD)
This isn't one of the best black films around, but it is a cult classic. Funny, and dramatic at times, the plot isnt' all that great but holds together a little better than some. Tired of seeing these type of movies though.

The greatest,

Ice Cube presented the audience with an in your face look at the consiquences of your decisions. I loved this movie not just for the beautiful women, but for being able to feel the actresses pain. We never really think of the problems and reasoning women sale themselves short. Life is hard, making bad decisions come regularly, but you must be able to look at yourself each morning.

Bernie Mac stole this picture,

In spite of the thin plot line and the volumptous semi naked women, the comedian Bernie Mac stole this picture! He played his part of the low life, club owning, hustler with perfect timing and high humor. He made this movie enjoyable to watch!

I SEE THE VISION, BUT,
By "2r45" (Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Players Club [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I could see the same vision that first time director Ice Cube saw with this script. Unfortunately he was unable to successfully carry it out. The story follows a young woman (Lisa Raye) who becomes a stripper to support herself while in college. Along the way various sub-plots involving a night club owner, school, moonlighting, and her stressful family life, all add up to make the story more interesting. The most disappointing aspect of the film, aside from some bad acting, is the fact that certain emotions that the audience should be compelled to feel are not attained. However, there are two MAJOR REASONS that this movie should be seen despite the above.....BERNIE MAC (Dollar Bill) and CHRYSTALE WILSON (Ronnie). These two have really great performances in this film. In particular Chrystale Wilson is very good in her tough but sexy stripper role. Despite the plot there is not very much graphic nudity in this film; basically just enough to get the point across(another mistake). None the less, if you like Ice Cube, I would suggest checking out FRIDAY or TRESPASS. And also be sure to see this film for Mac and Wilson, but don't expect too much else.

A Promising Directorial Debut,
By
This review is from: The Players Club (DVD)
In his directorial debut, rapper/actor Ice Cube chose to paint a tale of a young, single mother living in the South, who takes a job as a stripper to survive in the real word. Diamond (excellently played by actress LisaRaye), one of the top names at the "Players Club" is a young mother trying to support herself and her young son. Determined to attain her college degree, she is lured to the world of stripteasing by two strippers who encounter her at a dead-end retail job.Soon, Diamond, is the toast of the Players Club, but trouble lurks in every corner not only for Diamond, but also for the club's owner. Realistic, somewhat sensitive to the trials many young women who are down on their luck face, director Ice Cube does a great job directing his actor in telling this tale of life in the new South. At times the story can run a bit too long, but at the end, the viewer is reassured that Diamond has moved on to bigger and better things in her life. The film features great performances by Jamie Fox ("Any Given Sunday"), Charlie Murphy ("CB4"), and of course LisaRaye, who is a very talented actress. The "Players Club" is much more entertaining than some of its stripteasing film predecessors (e.g. "Showgirls"; "Striptease")and it does illustrate Ice Cube's talent behind the camera. It is a good film with a message of survival mixed in, and plenty of behind-the-scenes coverage of what goes on at a gentlemen's club.

I love Ice Cube! He is so hot, even during his NWA days. This movie was okay. It has an unrealistic story of a young and very attractive woman who becomes a teen mom, leaves home and supports herself as a stripper. She attends college and falls asleep in class, yet unbelievably manages to graduate and become, as the ending implies, a reputable journalist. There is a very graphic and disturbing rape scene that makes me cringe just thinking about it. The best part of the movie was the wicked girl fight! It makes me wish that I could kick my ex-boyfriend's a$$ like that!

Set against the backdrop of an Atlanta strip club, the story revolves around the relationship between a gangster and a stripper. Diana is working in a shoe store to support her young son, when friends introduce her to the more lucrative world of stripping. The owner of the strip club, Dollar Bill, is being pursued by creditors. Diana's cousin Ebony gets a job in the club too, but falls into sleazier private party jobs, which lead her into trouble. Bernie Mac is hilarious in this movie. This movie has the funniest case ever. Very entertaining.
