"Are you insane?"

Damned near close, Paolo thought but said, "perfectly sane."

Why did she have to be so exasperating? He'd tried to soften the circumstances of their arrangement, but she'd thrown everything in his face.

Paolo wanted to release her from their bargain. He'd thought about doing it a half-a-dozen times during the past week and every time he talked himself out of it by putting the situation into perspective. He wanted to hurt Robbie Gutierrez for causing João's death.

Even to his own ears, his excuse sounded weak. Fact was Yvonne Floyd had become more than a way to even a score, she'd become an obsession.

He'd meant to only seduce her, have a few pictures taken by Malfi, who would leak them to the press. His game plan should have been simple as a wall pass. Of course, like any play the execution turned out to be damn near impossible because he hadn't anticipated the strength of the defense or taken into account his own weaknesses. And above all he was consistently breaking the cardinal rule: never take your eyes off the goal.

Paolo frowned. The idea of being out played by a woman stumped him. How did this happen and so fast? The women he'd slept with had always been as interchangeable as cleat socks. Extremely superstitious, he wore a new pair every single game for luck.

His involvement with Yvonne Floyd was complicated at best. Paolo found it harder and harder to remain detached. Every single emotion he'd never associated with a woman came into play with her: anxiety, aggression, jealousy and even neediness.

Even now when she sat so rigid and distant, he suffered this insatiable need to wring some kind of emotion from her until she lay raw and vulnerable beneath him. No time like the present.

Snatching up one of the chairs, Paolo placed it between her legs then plopped down on it. He grabbed hold of her booted feet and pulled her toward him, as he hiked up her knee-length skirt.

She'd come dressed like a librarian or a school teacher in a camel-colored sweater set, matching skirt, dark brown boots and a high ponytail. Paolo almost nutted on himself. Her scent, a combination of crisp wool, brand new leather and vanilla scented lotion, aroused him more than any one hundred dollar perfume.

Sure she'd chosen the outfit to appear unappealing, Paolo smiled. Her plan had backfired. Big time. She was his biggest fantasy come to life. With a certified I.Q. of one hundred and forty-seven, he'd spent just as much time in the reference section as he did on the pitch.

"Can I ask you a question?"

Paolo glanced up and caught her gaze. Her brown eyes contained a hint of vulnerability, and something else he'd seen many times over the years. Lust. She desired him, but was fighting it. Admiring her tenacity, he decided to entertain her, at least for the moment.

"Want to know how long I'm going to keep you in my bed?"

Thoroughly exasperated, she sighed and poked out her bottom lip. Paolo resisted the urge to take it in his mouth and suck on it until she begged him to kiss her.

"You want to know why I have these beautiful Japanese features, even though I'm a third generation Brazilian."

He must have caught her off guard because she frowned. "Actually that wasn't my question, but since you brought up the subject."

Now it was Paolo's turn to be caught off guard. Every single woman he'd met had wondered about his heritage. Usually when people imagined Brazilians, they didn't picture them with Asian features.

"Brazil has the second largest Japanese population outside of Japan. My great, grandfather migrated in 1912 in hopes of becoming rich. He ended up working for less to nothing on a coffee plantation. He survived, married my great grandmother and the rest is history."

Paolo watched her eyes widen. And for some reason he experienced a feeling of affinity.

"Umm...what was your real question?"

"It sounds sort of corny now."

"Nothing is corny when it comes from your lips." She rolled her eyes and Paolo chuckled. He should have known by now she didn't buy his bullshit. It was one of the things he liked about her. He squeezed her ankle, and slid his hand up her calf as he said, "go ahead and ask."

She stared at him for the several seconds, then lifted her shoulders and sighed. "I was wondering what you like to do for fun."

How random! "I like making love to a beautiful woman." Her brown eyes narrowed and for some reason Paolo knew if he didn't come clean, things might not go so well later. "I like playing football...and I love working the earth. The garden. I designed and planted all of it by hand."

She turned her head and gazed out at the five or so acres behind his estate. During her silence, time stood still. Paolo suddenly realized he actually anticipated her feedback to his hard work. So much so, he could hear the blood pounding in his ears.

"It's beautiful," she murmured.

Paolo couldn't prevent the smile forming on his lips even if he tried. "Do you have any interests or hobbies?"

She shrugged her shoulders. "Cooking and traveling, you know the usual, but also doodling, especially when I'm stressed out."

Paolo frowned. Doodling? Was that some kind of fetish? Deus, he hoped so! "What's doodling?"

"Doodling is like sketching or drawing. I've always wanted to learn how to paint. What about you? Anything of interest you've wanted to learn for some time now?"

Paolo answered automatically, "you."

Tipping her head back, she laughed. Infectious and slightly husky, her amusement had to be the sexiest thing he'd heard since...well, Paolo couldn't quite remember. Her laughter made him think of rumpled sheets and half-smoked cigarettes.

Turned on, Paolo scooted forward. He ran his nose against the inside of her leg and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good! January 2, 2012
By Taija
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I came across this as it was an Amazon recommendation based on other books I had read. I must say I was impressed! The cover, while sexy, didn't provide a good basis for how well this book was written. It was virtually free of all of those typos and grammatical errors that seem to plague other books of this nature. Yvonne is an educated black female who agrees to play the part of fiancé for her best friend, Robbie, who happens to be a gay soccer player living abroad. He is trying to get a multi-year contract from one of the teams, but knows that his chances could be affected if the media got hold of the fact that he was gay. The captain of the team, Paulo, can't stand Robbie as he feels that he is the reason behind his best friend's suicide. At the same time he is enamored of Yvonne almost to the point of obsession.
The characters are all well developed and Ms. Brown really takes the time to provide insight into their lives and how they feel. The details, from how Robbie picked out Yvonne's clothes and assisted her with make up, to how the other "trophy wives" acted all came together beautifully to create one heck of a good story. I loved the fact that the setting, story line, and plot were all fresh without any of the normal clichés usually associated with anything un-American. Paulo was Brazilian (with some Japanese thrown in) and he didn't call Yvonne the overused and offensive "Mami" at every turn. It seems to me that many authors just go with what they know off hand when dealing with anything out of the norm. Ms. Brown seemed to have personal knowledge (or did some darn good research) about football (aka soccer), living abroad, and the different European countries she magically transports you to.
And talk about steamy love scenes. She got my attention quick and didn't have to revert to the shock tactics to get me fantasizing. It was well worth the unbelievably low price and it was a good long read so I felt like it was money well spent. I am looking for more from Ms. Brown as soon as I post this!

3.0 out of 5 stars A base hit not a home run January 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wont go too much into this story because there are other reviews that do just that. This story could have been a home run but, the inconsistencies ruined it.

You mean to tell me that Yvonne and Robbie are such good friends she is willing to pose as his fiancee but Yvonne didn't feel comfortable enough to tell him about the love affair she was having with Paolo??? that didn't seem logical. In fact there were a lot of illogical things in this story. For example, Paolo's best friend committed suicide and Robbie was loosely connected with the death. This gave Paolo a reason to hate Robbie but it didn't explain why Robbie would have a issue with Yvonne taking Paolo as her lover. Also, the situation at the end of the story, (I won't spoil it by telling you) but it was so ill timed. It seemed like it was thrown in just to wrap up the story. I don't know how she thought she would get away with hiding it. It was just too over the top. This story was okay it started out with a nice premise but it was not well thought out which made it more like a base hit than a home run.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised...more please January 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book b/c I've recently became a fan of IR romance and figured it was a cheap buy. Best 99 cents I spent so far on Amazon! Koko has created an impactful plot, fun characters, witty dialogue, and hot hot love scenes! She didnt spend too much time harping over the differences b/w the lovers, she lets the "sheets" do the talking! if you are a fan of strong Alpha males paired with strong vibrant women then this is the book to get. I read tons of Kindle books and so many arent worth the time it takes to write a review, but I had to write this review and give props to KoKo Brown. This book is everything thing an erotic romance should be. It has an awesome story, likeable characters, and enough steam to power a locomative! If I had to share any negatives it would be that the book has a bit of a late start, meaning I didnt fall in love with the characters into about 45 minutes into the reading. I am also upset that I will be spending more money purchasing KoKo books! Buy the book!

More About the Author

Koko Brown is the pseudonym for a quintessential erotic romance junkie, who once read over 200 Zebra Club novels the summer before her senior year in high school.

Koko's writing career began at the tender age of nine when she self-published and distributed a newspaper to her fellow classmates. Unfortunately, her principal put her out of business after one best-selling issue.

Undaunted, Koko continued to write and read everything she could get her hands on. She honed her writing skills as a staff writer for her college's newspaper and even wrote obituaries for the local newspaper.

One day, while daydreaming in bed, Koko came up with the idea for her first erotic manuscript. In two short weeks, she fleshed out the story, cleaned it up, then sent it to Ellora's Cave during the Christmas holiday. By January she heard from one of their editors and by March (and many revisions) she signed a contract for her vampire novel, Charmed.

Koko lives in the great sunshine state! She loves to travel, shop in thrift stores, ride motorcycles, and serving as a volunteer.
