5.0 out of 5 stars Donna who? Let's hear it for "the rest"! July 22, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Now don't get me wrong by my title - I do love Donna Loren and her many singing works (see my other review of her "at this CD's time, yet unreleased" set). But I think the makers of this collection felt they needed to mention her as a "feature" here (along with the Blossoms and others) to give it a boost. Not necessary at all! Her two contributions - "Muscle Bustle" and "Dream World" aren't even two of my favorites of hers by selections.

But you know what? There is so much other fun and great stuff here by lesser-known names (all tracks here being from the Challenge Label), you don't have to care that much! This is the biggest set of works by the Blossoms (6 of 28 overall tracks) and the cleanest cuts of the Delicates I've heard - my only samples of them being from the scratchy "Poodle Skirts/Pony Tails" sets to date. It seems many were catching on to the "Wall of Sound" and lots of great interpretations! Among my favorites "The Boy I Love" - Renee Medina; "Come on Everybody" - Delicates; "Crying on my Pillow" - Dorothy Berry and the powerful cover of 50s pop tune "A Little Bit of Soap" - Yvonne Carroll. I really expected another enormous "explosion" with the gigantic beat buildup from "I Want to Get Married" - Delicates, but then this trails off in to a beautiful soul tune.

Also very cute and peppy songs too, like: "You Haven't Seen Nothing (till you've seen my new boyfriend)" - Dee Dee Young; "Good-Bye Ginny" (mistitled "Jimmy") - Panda Berry; "Love Bells" (ting-a-ling-a-ling!) - The Galens; "I Gotta Tell it" - Blossoms and the sweetest of all being "Date Bait" - Diane Maxwell. The only track here credited from the late 1950s ('59) and you can easily tell by the beat. "...I hear your motor comin' down the street, so I rush to the door with lightin' on my feet...!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Girl Group Sound Collector Must-Have June 10, 2012
Format:Audio CD
If you're a collector of Golden Oldies music then you must be aware of the London-based Ace Records who cover all aspects of Oldies from Blues to R&B to Rockabilly and, of course, R&R, as well as Folk, Jazz and Country. Here they provide that branch-off group of collectors devoted to the Girl Group Sound with 28 tracks recorded for Gene Autry's Challenge Records, the majority of them from 1961-1964, including three unreleased at the time they were recorded. Their attention to sound reproduction is evident - as always - as is their devotion to background information - simply the best you are going to find anywhere with a multiple-page insert written by Mick Patrick sprinkled with the vintage photos and poster-record reproductions that have become their unchallenged trademark.

Releasing singles for a wide variety of artists from 1957 to 1969, Challenge Records didn't exactly burn up the charts, with their best being the instrumental group The Champs, along with Jerry Wallace, The Knickerbockers, Jerry Fuller and a couple from Country artists Wynn Stewart and Jan Howard. As for the Girl Groups, their charted singles were not only minimal, but usually finishing in the nether regions of the Billboard Pop Hot 100 - if they charted at all. Not one among the 25 presented here that were released (see the Comments below) made the Hot 100, although they do give you the flipsides of three that did - Love Bells by The Galens b/o the 1963 # 70 Baby, I Do Love You on Challenge 59212; Date Bait by Diane Maxwell b/o the 1959 # 95 Jimmy Kiss And Run on Challenge 59039; and I'll Wait by The Blossoms b/o their 1961 # 71 Son-In-Law (an "answer" song to Ernie K-Doe's monster hit Mother-In-Law) on Challenge 59109.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will want to add this to your collection! March 8, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The people at ace records have done it again with this terriffic compilation of the Challenge label. Some of the ballad standouts are write me a letter by the blossoms featuring Darlene Love before the Phil Spector days. Chinese lanterns by the Galens is more on the popular side and I've Been Hurt by the Delicates is more bluesy. For me the stand out and reason enough to buy this cd was the never before released How long must this fool pay by Yvonne Carroll. The arrangement is soulful and lush. I can't believe this was never released back in the day.
