Argueably his Best Solo Album,
By
This review is from: Playin Up a Storm (Audio CD)
When this L.P. was released back in 1977 it was a "sleeper" not much press or acknowledgement. But it was released amid many a great albums for many music genres to be sure. Make no Mistake This Is a Classic! It has a very soulful yet loosly polished sound and feel. Greg covers some older songs in here beautifully well. It is I think his best smoothest effort. The Album moves from song to song like he had planned to do this collection for some time. He has some excellent musicians and backing him up and it serves to produce a flawless nostalgic album that is quite satisfying.

Very Underated,

This is a very good cd. Coupled with Laid Back and you have the best of Greg's work from that period. It is kind of short for a cd but it was an album full of great music. Not a bad cut on the cd, Come and Go Blues, Cryin' Shame, etc. Enjoy!

This is Gregg Allman's second studio album. It was released in 1977 while the Allman Brothers Band was in the middle of a 4 year breakup and having major internal problems.
This is a very nice album but there isn't enough on it to give it a five star recommendation. The best song on the album is Come and Go Blues, but Gregg Allman had already recorded it with the Allman Brothers Band 4 years earlier on Brothers And Sisters. Matthews Arrival is a funky instrumental, but is repetitive and not that interesting. I normally like instrumentals, especially those from the Allman Brothers. Unfortunately, this track is just inconsequential filler. Subtracting those two tracks, that leaves only 7 new songs. The CD is only 35 minutes long, and if you ignore those two tracks, that leaves only 26 minutes of new, good songs. The 7 songs and 26 minutes of music range from good to very good. They are blues, soul and funk oriented. Allman's voice if very good and the back up band is great. The production values are very good. Really, the only downfall on this CD is that it is so short and the only killer song is already on a much better album. Combine this with Laid Back and you would have a very nice 4 star CD.

Once was lost....,

I just about wore this LP out when it first hit the racks but I eventually lost it to a meltdown leaving it in the car...then I realized maybe Amazon.com has it....yes!!! This album still has the magic for me, great blues tunes. Greg is a quality blues singer and in this era has a slightly cleaner edge in his vocal than his more recent stuff, obviously younger but strong and nonetheless outstanding. His keyboard stuff ain't too shabby either. No disappointments, every song awesome and great flow. Peter

Not his most famous but still very good,

This solo album can get lost in the shuffle with his other works but it is a very good and almost lost album. A little more uptempo than "Laid Back" but in the same vein. Top songs include "Sweet Feelin"", "Come and Go Blues", "Matthew's Arrival" and "One More Try". All 9 songs are good and one wishes they could have squeezed a few more songs in there. Still- a very solid 4.5 stars here.

ONE OF GREGG'S BEST ALBUMS, EVERY TRACK IS GREAT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE AWESOME SHM AUDIO FORMAT. MUST HAVE FOR ANY CD COLLECTION, BUT DON'T PAY THESE RIDICULOUS OVER-INFLATED PRICES, I BOUGHT MINE FROM THE MUSIC SPECIALIST ON E BAY, THEY ALSO HAVE A STORE IN GEMM, ANTEATERMUSIC. SAVE YOURSELF A TON OF CASH.

I won this ablum at a boardwalk in New Jersey the year it came out and played the grooves to death. This album is Gregg Allman's best solo effort to date. He has funk along with a great cover of a Ray Charles tune and that awesome growling vocal. Though I have the album and have burned my album to cd, I still had to pick this up for price. It is GREAT!
