3.0 out of 5 stars So over the top, yet such good fun--, September 10, 2008
Alison Diamond's mom is a kind of evil Martha Stewart on steroids. Her grandma Tamara, is the power-mad matriarch from Dynasty. Alison's so-called best friend and cousin Kelly is a beautiful sociopath. The story opens with mom getting hauled off to jail by the FBI, the family's assets all frozen, Kelly turning on viciously on Alison, while the whole family looks forward to Alison and her mom being tossed out of Grandma Diamond's good graces (and will). Somewhere along the way a supporting cast of hot guys, a real friend (with major issues) and the rest of the Diamond clan are introduced, as Alison moves from a passive, risk-averse teen, to a potential player in the Diamond family political game. The book ends with a bang--and the story's just beginning. This Gossip Girls-Lite is for any teen reader who wants frothy angst amongst the rich and powerful. (This review is a spoiler-free version of a review originally published in the Fall 2008 issue of the WashRag)
