Derek Severson is a firefighter to his core even though he's forsaken the job he loved after a deeply personal and tragic accident thoroughly rocked his world so he escaped to San Amaro Island were he's putting in time running a beach bar called the Shell Shack. Derek's a tortured soul, so torn up by his grief and loss that he's basically been existing, but certainly not living.

Macey Locke's fresh off a tour in the Peace Corp. and she's got a plan to help her BFF Derek return to the land of the living. Macey's been in love with Derek for a long time, even though she's known he never returned her feelings. It's time to see if she can't change his mind about her and make him realize that they are perfect for each other. And she's not about to take no for an answer.

Amy Knupp writes about the age old question in Playing with Fire...can life-long friends become lovers. The romance between Macey and Derek was slow to build because Derek's built a big ole stone wall around his heart and it's going to take a determined, patient and understanding woman to break down all his barriers. Macey Locke is just the woman for the job but she's got her work cut out for her because Derek's going to be one tough nut to crack.

The last person Derek wants invading his Island hide out is Macey Locke. His childhood friend is stirring up way too many feelings and he's been quite happy all alone in the numb little existence he's created for himself. I have to give Macey credit because there were times when Derek's treatment of her was less than admirable. I'm not sure I would have stuck around as long as she did.

I loved Burnaby the dog. Nothing like a cute doggie in need to bring out the vulnerable side of a man who's forgotten how it feels to love.

A very VERY very good Superromance. I have a soft spot for friends-to-lovers and unrequited-love storylines so I decided to pick up that book right after reading the blurbs. And I wasn't disappointed I did !!
The story was sweet and sad (and sexy too). The setting, the characters, the dialogues... everything felt just right, just how it should be. This was my first book from this author but definitely not the last. Lucky me it's the first book in a series and there is no way I'm missing the others. Plus it takes place in Texas... what's more to ask ??

Macey Locke leaves the Peace Corps after two years and heads to San Amaro Island, Texas, home of her best friend Derek Severson. She loves Derek, but knows he does not return her deepest feelings. However, her mission is to help her BFF move passed the tragic death of his girlfriend Julie in a fire last year.

As a firefighter Derek feels guilty that in spite of his occupation he failed to save Julie's life. Worse, he finds his attraction to Macey makes him think he is betraying Julie's memory. However, as he realizes he loves Macey, he also concludes kind-hearted Julie would want him to go on with his life. Now to persuade Macey they can be friends and lovers.

This is a terrific contemporary tale with a romantic subplot that enhances the relationship drama between the lead couple. The key to the well-written novel is Derek as the audience will feel his grief and commiserate with him; feelings from others he does not want. His guilt for failing Julie and for falling in love with his BFF make for a strong emotional story line though the premise of a second chance at love with a best buddy is not new. Amy Knupp provides a powerful novel as this Texas Firefighter learns what happens to one's heat when Playing With Fire of the woman who loves him.
